A couple of moon shots

I have been trying to get some decent airliner+moon shots for ages, these two are my best efforts so far, taken at Heathrow during February 2008. Even when you get a clear day and a visible moon it is amazing how hard it is to get an airliner in the right place (unless you cheat in Photoshop which I don’t 🙂 )

Nice shots there like the 1st one 😎 I dont know if its the place or not but I am sure thats the place where Neil amerstrong and his team landed on the moon on the 1st shot below the dark patch you see at the top.

On the BA shot, the area at the starboard wingtip is Mare Serenitatis. The area to the right of that is Mare Tranquillitatis and this is where the first moon landing (by humans) was. 😉 The round area sitting above that on its own is Mare Crisium.

Thanks for your kind comments. The first shot is quite heavily cropped and the second less so as I used a 1.5 extender with the lens. These shots only really come off when the moon is nearly full (I have a calendar which has the phases of the moon) and is rising or setting during daylight hours. There are various web sites that give the rising and setting times for the moon. The sky also needs to be as clear as possible. You need to be in positions when the moon is either rising or setting so that it not too high in the sky. On this day they were using 09R for departures and the moon was due to rise at around 2pm. I guessed that some time during the afternoon the planes would cross in front of the moon as they climbed out, as it happened only a few did so its down to luck really.

All the best, Tony

Just posted in Adam’s thread re the moon; number 1 is just superb, would love to know how these shots are achievable, how much cropping have you done?

Look forward to more

Both superb, but I think the first just has the edge over the second.

Very nice.
I like trying to get these kind of shots myself, have a few similar shots from LHR myself.
