A couple of questions….

First, one of the local papers (Northants on Sunday) has a front page spread of the discovery, on a beach in Cornwall, of the remains of a ‘long lost Flying Fortress bomber’ which crash landed in the sea during 1944, but no clues on its identity!

The picture shows the recovery of one of the propellers but no mention of the state of the rest of the airframe and I wonder if anybody has any further information on this discovery?

Secondly, is anybody aware of or can recommend any biographies available for both Hugh Trenchard and Hugh Dowding?

TIA

“Trenchard”, by Andrew Boyle, published Collins 1962.

I bought and have read an excellent biography, I think it was entitled just “Trenchard” but cannot lay hands on it now as my ex-wife has refused to let me collect any of my personal possessions from our former home (in which she now resides alone) for the last 3 years! Therefore I am afraid I cannot give you the publisher’s details, etc.

Thanks for the lead anyway, I guess that I’ll just keep looking…

Hi,

I think that this is all part of the Looe B-17.

Not many surfing beaches around that area (bit of low beach-break, with taller peaks over rocky shallows – not good. Unless the guys are all dressed up for Fistral but are actually there to pose and make sandcastles, of course!;)), even though the background does look vaguely East Looe-ish – doesn’t the newspaper give even a remote clue about the location?

Looe B-17

Hello Tony – thanks for the news article and for Ross with the information about the Looe B-17 in October. I had missed that piece and it answers the question as to why I hadn’t seen it in our local rag. My copy of “The West Briton” covers the Truro area in the main and only occasionally comes up with information about Portreath and Perranporth memorials. 🙂 – cheers Allan 🙂

Sorry for the delay, work beckoned!

ALLAN125 – The only information that I could see, was that printed on the front page (see scan below). I certainly couldn’t find anything printed inside.

Hello Tony – I live down in Cornwall but have seen nothing in our local rag – can you supply more details and I will see what I can find out for you ?

cheers – Allan 🙂
