PanzerJohn.
I wouldn’t ban the TT. But then again I don’t condone the replications of said event round Derbyshire, particularly Cromford and Matlock Bath and then up over the Cat and Fiddle that take place every sunday in the summer. Or for that matter those that treat the ride up the Horseshoe Pass to the Ponderosa as a hill climb/time trial either. You are of course right in that natural selection does free the world of some of the idiots. But all too often the take their pillion with them or some other poor soul who was just minding their own business.I too, in a different capacity to Jim, have had to inform people of a death or help them agonise over whether/when a machine should be turned off. It really isn’t a pleasant experience. But not as unpleasant as Mr and Mrs Smith coming home from their Sunday afternoon at the garden centre to find that little Billy is no more.
I can see the thrill in speed, I can see the enjoyment of a motorcycle, but I can’t see the thrill in placing myself and others in danger.
Enjoy your pootle, it really is a lovely evening for it.

PanzerJohn. I.M.H.O. no one is having a go at you , however, there are those few idiots who give the good guys a bad name. I would hazard a guess that most of us have had a M/Cycle at some stage in our lives prior to getting married and having a family, therfore changing up to a car. Todays top news?. Youths 18yrs old being charged up to 4 Grand for Insurance. I wonder why.
I agree with Kev, not only do they have a family they leave behind, but the other/s they kill in the process.
The very last day as a Police Officer was 18hrs long, the reason? a young motorcyclist was negotiating a L/Hand bend at speed, lost control, of his bike and slid along the road and under the wheels of an HGV, Upon reaching the scene, I picked up the riders crash helmet, only to find his severed head still inside. After clearing the scene, photos, measurements etc, I was in those days the Coroners Officer, and one of my duties was to go the the parents/wife of the deceased, and break the bad news.
The worst bit for me was going home everytime beit a car or motorcycle,RTA I had dealt with, and not being able to tell my family how my day went, it all was bottled up inside. No such thing as Councilling in those days, so perhaps one may see where some of us ie Kev and myself are coming from.Perhaps the worst thing of the lot was having to attend the Post Mortem on those that died, traumatic to say the least.
Good old days?, some were, some not so good.
Jim.

You win.I shall sell my bikes and buy a Volvo with a caravan and drive everywhere at 30. And stop watching endless repeats of Top Gear on Dave, its obviously not good for me.I could go on about the arguments of safe speed against innappropriate speed but I fear your mind is made up.Yes there are plenty of idiots on bikes, but natural selection tends to weed them out, unlike car drivers. From your remarks I would guess you are (or were)some kind of first responder, people who I hold in the highest regard, having been aided by them a few times over the years. In over 30 years of riding I have competed at high levels in various disciplines, winning a few trophies along the way, ridden across a few exotic countries and owned nearly 100 machines.Picked up few serious injuries as well, and lost a few good friends, but would you be one of those that would ban the TT?.What was meant as a light hearted remark seems to have bought out a few of the holier than thou brigade, who of course all stick religiously to the speed limits,at all times, and therefore win the argument everytime.
Suns out, I’m off for a potter.

The loss of the idiotic motorcyclist who kills himself riding at breakneck speeds on unsuitable roads is no loss at all. It’s the poor devils they take with them and the families left behind, including their own, that pay the price.
Work related or otherwise I’ve had the misfortune to attend the scene of four fatal motorcycle accidents. Every one as a result of their own selfish stupidity and grossly excessive speed. On two of those occasions they took innocent people with them.

I will be glad of it next time I am in England.
As for bikers roaring through it at illegal breakneck speeds, what goes round comes round. They end up doing an impression of superman and then leaving an impression in a wall or similar. Then we hear the usual nonsense……
“He was a very careful rider, never went over the limit, always bought flowers for his mum and was such a nice boy……it was the car driver’s fault”.
Every biker (Beyond a 100cc sewing machine) rides too fast. Fact.
Maybe not the Gold Wing club.

OMG!!!!!! does that mean you’re going to visit me more often ???
Andy, I’m not at home either !!!!!

B****R!
Thats the end of my excuses for not visiting that nice Mr Xtangomike very often.
The ten hour traffic jams at Hindhead were always a valid reason for making my polite excuses. It also means he’s about half an hour closer to me, now.
PS – Peter, I’m not at home. 😀

Great isn’t it.

Which is exactly why all motorcycles should be fitted with a device which reveals their identity when viewed from the front so that the rider has to obey the laws of the road all the time instead of when he/she chooses.
Only having half the number of wheels fitted to a car does not absolve the rider of half their resposibility to ride within the law, nor does it allow them to be half as considerate to their fellow road users.

Money well spent – as was the Baldock By-Pass and it’s Weston Hills Tunnel ( I can get to Duxford 15 minutes quicker than previously).
Give it a year and nobody will complain about the cost.
