For some reason best known to himself (well at his age who can argue) Dad was just about to throw this out when my Mother saved it.
My lad Joe proudly displays his Great Grandfathers WW1 kitbag.
Sgt William.S.Appleton was fitter/armourer to Capt Albert Ball VC 56 Sqn.
Personally I am chuffed to bits with it’s discovery it’s new to me as well. 😀
All I have to do now is find the locking clasp, which on investigation I now know looks like this D ring in the bottom photo. When I was Joe’s age I wondered what it was for, it’s in a box in that garage somewhere !!

What an amazing find! I hope it goes on to spark young Joe’s imagination and prompt him to find out all about his family’s part in twentieth century history. I bet he’ll be pretty proud of the discovery when he goes back to school in September; there won’t be many kids who will have such a great summer holiday story… 🙂

And what a great prop to use to prompt your dad to tell you and Joe about some of his experiences as Sgt W S Appleton.
It is a wonderful treasure to have ‘discovered’ and great to know that it will stay in the family.

Well actually, I’d imagine with that condition and provenance, priceless is probably not quite true, I would say it would fetch quite a high price, perhaps you should find out when there is a Antiques Roadshow next around, it would great to see it on TV and what those ummn…experts would make of it…. 😀 😉
