Hi,
Was trying out my new toy (EOS 350D) here at Gatwick yesterday lunchtime, and here are some first results. (Wasn’t sure whetehr to post them here or ion the photo thread secion – mods feel free to move if you think sensible)
Shots were taken in varying shooting modes, using an old 70 – 200mm EF lens, which may explain why they look a little “soft” to me. Not sur ehow my Fuji S5000 would have performed under same conditions, and didn’t think to bring it along for a side by side test shoot (D’oh 😮 ).
Among the “models” is an Oasis 747 which was operating only the second of their new weekly trips to HK from LGW. (Unfortunately I didn’t have a camera when it operated the first flights last week 🙁 ).
Have shrunk the files to reduce size, so am not sure the posted images will reflect what I have here on the PC, but here goes. Most shots have been “auto corrected” and/or cropped in a photoshop program, but in a couple of cases I enclose the original shot too for comparison. The last couple of sunset shots were shot through a grubby window, so softness in those may not just be down to me or the camera!
Any thoughts, comments, helpful criticism welcome.

Great shots for starters!! 😉
If you want my advise…I wouldn’t use the “auto-correct” tool in your editing programme. In my experience its usually not very good.
Yep. I am aware of that, but I was trying to sort them out quickly on the office PC, which has limited photo software….. even so, results came out bette rthan expected. May post a couple of full size images next time around.
Thansk for the tips and positive feedback so far.

Were abouts did you take them from by the way???
My office (we’re nothing to do with the airport, we simply rent the floor space 😉 ) is based on 7th floor of Norfolk House, up above the South terminal, and there’s a great view from up here. My boss even had the consideration to let me have the desk by the window – more fool him! I’ve got a great view of the south terminal long-haul “satellite” gates across to the North Terminal apron. Luckily we’re not on the southern side of the building or I’d get no work done at all 😀 .
If you know where the old Gatwick viewing area/enthusiast shop used to be, the Oasis and Sunset photos were taken from about three floors above there 🙂 – it’s a shame the windows never get cleaned!
The misc arrival shots were taken from the south terminal short term carpark, so were shot into a heavily back lit sky at lunchtime, so for a first attempt at using the new camera and it’s centre-weighted metering option I’m reasonably happy with them.
Hope to post more photos in due course though i don’t bring the camers in everyday, and Sod’s Law says the exciting things happen when the camera’s at home! I’s just a shame that most of the LGW interesting arrivals and departures seem to be early am or late pm, theres nothing much but assorted “city-hoppers” moving at lunchtime.
