A few from LHR today

Hi folks,
haven’t posted for a little while due to work etc; I had a few hours at LHR today, below are the results. To be honest I was really dissappointed with the outcome of these shots as it was my first real outing using RAW format. I have taken a few in the past but was again dissapointed in the results. How many of you guys use RAW instead of jpg or tiff and if so how do you get on with the RAW format? I know it will improve as I understand the format better, however any help and guidance would be really appreciated.

All the best

Si

And finally this is the 2 Seaking Mk4’s taking the 15 Sailors who were held hostage in Iran back down to Devon. Just caught them as they lifted from the VIP terminal.

Great shooting Si and thanks for your comment in my thread.
I think we were there on different days tho – unless you were there Friday also.

Your Airbus closeups are superb – great sharpness and colours.

Thanks guys for your kind words and advice. I am using the built in RAW converter in CS2 to do the initial work, then finishing off in CS2. Again, I think it is like most new things it is a case of getting usd to the new format and gradually the skill of processing will naturally flow. I have a few magazine articles and a tutorial from Practical Photography which will be useful. I found the ESSO station by pure chance as I had parked my car beside a pub a little further up the runway. A very nice taxi driver who was on his break walked me down to the garage. Met a few newspaper photographers (mail and Mirror) who were waiting for the BMED to land from Tehran; again very helpful in showing me different settings on the camera for different situations etc.

James, I never actually saw the 320 landing but as it apprached the departure frequency took it and told the other aircraft that were holding for departure that they would need to wait as an aircraft had called a PAN (emergency) and it would be landing on 27L, it was the BEMED 320. Never found out why this was the case but it landed fine and the Seakings lifted some 30 minutes later.

Paul, Ian once again, thanks for the great advice; I will keep at it.

All the best

Alright Si! I see you found the Esso Garage!

The Kuwait and ACA A330 looks like the white balance is incorrect.

As for RAW, I shoot in RAW and edit in RAWshooter (levels, exp, sat) then CS2 (level, sharpening, noise).

Nice pics, some are nice and sharp.

Practise matey, your on ship ones the other were cracking…dif workflow maybe?

They all look great to me, Si. Especially the last one. Stunning!

I shoot RAW pretty much exclusively now and see no real reason why I’d return to shooting JPEG. It can take a little while to get used to and ‘de-mystify’ RAW, but believe me, once you do get the hang of it you’ll never look back! Eventually you hit a point where it all makes perfect sense and you edit RAW files just the same as you do JPEG, wondering what you ever found awkward about them. At least that’s the way it was for me!

One thing with RAW though, the histogram is very much your best friend!

Feel free to PM me or add me on MSN (paulmnichols@hotmail.com) if there’s anything I might be able to help with.
