A few photos – DX airshow, Sunday 4th

Not very happy with these, but maybe they will be of some use/enjoyment to someone, so i’ll post them anyway. Still using a crappy 28-80mm lens with my 20D, so the in-airs are barely adequate and the weather meant many of the ground shots weren’t even that sharp. I want to add that I have endless respect for the pilots of the Vampire pair and the Yak formation team, for flying in almost zero visibility in rain and cloud. Balls of steel does not describe them accurately. Goes without saying that the rain spoiled the day a little, but things did improve, and there was a great variation of types.

Here goes:

Thanks for the reply. It was indeed a grubby day. Sorry to hear it was practically ruined for you and yours.

I am most definitely on the hunt for a new lens. I was previously looking at a 55-250mm IS lens, but if you say the 70-210 is almost L series in quality, I may be willing to sacrafice the extra few feet in zoom ability. It’s also a bit cheaper by the looks of it, so thanks for that!

And thanks for looking.

Actually some those shots really show how murky it was at times on Sunday. I had a pair of OAPs with me (my grandfather was on the desk all morning in the Land Warfare Hall with two other Burma Star Veterans) and sadly we all got soaked during the Yak display and had to head home. Top marks to the Yak Pilots – I’ve no idea how they did their display in those conditions.

My partner and I got changed into dry clothes and came back during the Swordfish display – good job we did actually because the late evening light was really great for photography.

Cheers for posting them up!

PS if you’re considering a lens upgrade, you might do a lot worse than one like this – I picked one up a little while ago for my Canon 600D and it’s not far off L-Series Lens quality and not bad for most Aircraft shots. That particular one’s about as much as you’d want to spend on one – mine was nearer £120 which I think was a good price.
