A few pictures (23/12/05) from the 'enthusiast unfriendly' Gatwick

Tried a new ‘legal’ spot today – one of the only few on airport. Had seen people down there before and wondered if it was any good – answer = NO. Airline Owner has given me a new place of where to go next time for better views hopefully. (thanks mate). They really do need to make somewhere decent, like at Manchester, cos these really are poor!

Here they are:

Those shots would be brilliant if that fence wasn’t in the way 🙁

Whilst I appreciate we live in difficult times – and it has been said before on the forum, but I will say it again – BAA have no interest in spotters or enthusiasts as has been proved by the closure of facilities in recent years at Heathrow Gatwick and Edinburgh. When I first started spotting I remember walking out on top of the piers at Gatwick and there was a cafe reached by a bridge from the left hand pier for spotters and in the summer you could sit outside on a patio area have a cup of tea and sandwich and watch and photograph to your hearts content. Its a shame but I only see things getting worse rather than better.
Anyway on that depressing note I will wish everyone a Merry Christmas!! :diablo:

Yes, I remember spotting on the pier at Gatwick about 2200 one July night back in 1970 watching I-FINR a MS760 dropping somebody off at the terminal. Changed days indeed.

Also I would highly recomend walking through where the BCP buses park to take you to the terminal. Try and have a look to see if you can see the aircraft there and then walk around the buses and see what happens 😀

I will surmise that the fence is the is the one in the industrial estate, if so head back towards the Roundabout and turn Right , follow the road till you come to the Pub on you’re left hand side (The Aviator) on the right should be a lay by, turn around and park in the lay by, get out and walk about twenty yards up the road and you come to a crash gate go past this and you will see some bushes , walk through the bushes and you come to the fence .
You will get some half decent views and will manage some good picture’s used this place last year and spent the whole day there without getting bothered by the Police See attached Pitures
Regards Kevin

Ps Worst airport for Photograph has to be Stansted and it’s getting worse 😡

You can also drive round to the crash gate at the end of 08R, for taxiway shots.

Here’s a couple I took back in September:

It’s just round on the perimeter road.

That’s a good spot, except it was 26L today so wouldn’t have got anything. I’m gonna try a different airport next time though, but ideas on where to go would be welcome!

you can get closer to the action, loads closer. Theres a nice field on the end of the ’26 runways’…if theyre landing, you can produce shots like this even with the crummiest phone cameras

Or bring basic dutch spotting equipment, the 2,50m ladder. 😀

Dutch??? I’ve rarely seen a Dutch guy yielding a ladder at AMS. Germans on the other hand take them all the time.

It is a pity the wind did not come from the other direction. If it had you would have been able to make great final approach shots.

It is possible to get to the other end of the runway for final approach shots, but I am not really sure how. You do need your own transprt though as walking there is too far and there is no public transport to that spot.

Gatwick is a good place to get photos you just have to know where the best spots are 🙂

Not bad considering tho!

The lack of sunlight and the fence really screws the pictures.
