I bought the AFM/Flypast special on Carriers and was having a good look through, I love Carriers!
Anyway I was wondering if there were any records of international opperations where planes from one country landed on carriers of another, say British landing on American! I know some USN/USMC pilots landed on HMAS Melbourne and were not used to the size (Too small they said, they even had a club for pilots who “Survived” carrier landings on our little tub)!
Also was looking at the Sea Vixen, gee it was big! Does anyone have anypics on it, specifically the insides? I only noticed in the mag that it was a two seater, all ways wondered why the cockpit was off side!

In the book “They Gave Me a Seafire” by R ‘Mike’ Crosley, he gives an account of how two Seafires landed on USS Essex after running short of fuel following a strike on mainland Japan at the end of the war. Unfortunately both pranged – the Americans used a different landing and batting technique – one floated into the barrier and was later tipped into the sea; the other ripped its hook off and smashed its prop, but its ultimate fate is unknown.
It’s a good book, available in the Airlife Classic series.
Hello YakRider. I have just seen your post. Is there anything you want to know about this incident? The second pilot was my father. I have researched it well.

RE: A few questions!
Hi
I didnt see that issue but I do know of a case whereby a RAF Spitfire landed on a Navy Carrier because his drop tanks failed and killed the engine. I dont know the specifics about the failure but he saw the carrier and it was his only chance to land so he landed with brakes only with a bit of a bump.As you can imagine he was called a stupid Bloody idiot that he had endangered the lives of the crew and the carrier and got a good telling off. The Fate of the spit is less desireable it was throwen of the side of the carrier as it was RAF and this was a Navy vessel.
I was told this by another Spitfire Pilot so am pretty sure it is true.
cheers Scott

RE: A few questions!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-02-02 AT 03:52 AM (GMT)]Steve: Thanks for that, I’ll try to remember that for when we come over next year, my fiance is Welsh (Don’t hold it against her 😛 )
David: Cool, I’ll remember that fro when I go up there abit later on this year!
Rabs: I agree mate, I’d like to see more on the Spanish and Thai carriers my self, especially their hanger deck!
I was wondering if the Sea Vixen ever landed on a US carrier, cause they’d be the only other nation capable of landing and launching such a big plane!

RE: A few questions!
1) i’ve read this issue and was not impreesed , IMHo a lot more about other states could have been said. the historic stuff was new to me but the modern stuff focused o nthe wel lknown navies and neglected other carrier nation such as brazil which would be reall yintresting.
2) re landing on other ships i’ve read somewhere about uk planes on us deck (pre 78 when cats went).
3) check out this site about canadian carriers its very good. http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/Quarters/2230/index.html

RE: A few questions!
Ja – I don’t know exactly where you are in Australia but the is an
example of a Sea Vixen at the Queensland Air Museum which might well be available for an internal inspection .

RE: A few questions!
Moggy – maybe the reason was because he was head down most of the time plotting an intercept on the radar and the view outside was academic. This is a similar case in the Canberra PR.9 .

RE: A few questions!
Ja, I take it you’re currently in Oz? If you ever get the chance to come over to the UK, make the Fleet air arm Museum in Yeovilton your first destination, if only to see their Carrier exhibition… truly outstanding, especially the “Phantom launch”… 🙂

RE: A few questions!
But the bit where the secong guy sat was horrid beyond belief. Virtually no external viz. Can’t ever understand why they built it like that instead of putting him under a blown canopy.
