hey all,
just a brief photo post to keep y’all udated:) also, i apologise for the date…i have been awake for a considerable time, as im sure two particular members will understand:D:dev2:
fellow photographers Adam Kendall and Adam Dowley and myself went on a day out to lovely EGCC, only to have our wonderful phototaking plans hampered by fog!:( however, the mood brightened and the fog lifted at around 2pm, allowing us to take some great photos at around the rotation point of 24L, as well as a brief visit to the car parks. overall, a vary successful day! im sure you will hear more about our adventures as both Adams show you their creative talents in other threads!
unfortunately, these images are not full quality. i will try to replace them with better versions once i figure out how on my photobucket uploader:)
in no particular order, a sample:

thanks for viewing, feedback much appreciated!

i have looked at aperture before for editing, and i intend to play about with it next time i visit an apple store and get my hands on a mac pro now that my interest has been rekindled:D
i am unsure as to how the software would perform on my powerbook; the system can handle it im sure, but i am unsure as to performance in every day usage. i think, when i eventually make “the jump” to DSLR (and i dont know when that would be) i think i may seriously look at aperture as an “add on” to the camera. it is a very nice app and i have heard nothing but great things about it.
photoshop elements will carry me easily though my 5 megapixel period:D

the S2 cannot shoot RAW, but luckily iPhoto has the power to handle RAW now, so im “future proof”:D. i use that primarily for photo storage. most of the editing is done in photoshop elements for me.
Sam
Just bear in mind RAW isn’t a standardised format! Canon RAW is different from Nikon RAW, and even RAW files from different cameras from the same manufacturer can be different, so you’ll have to make sure you have the relevant plugin for your particular type of camera should you get one that can shoot RAW! I run Photoshop CS2 and had to download the plugin for my 30D, but luckily that also supports RAW files from my 350D. Confusing, but good fun!

Have you thought about using Aperture for mac Sam?
Tried both iphoto and aperture briefly, a lot more options in the latter for editing, has a really nice layout too!
Plus as you’re a student it’s cheap from the Higher Education store. 🙂

RAW is wonderful! 😀
The file sizes can be something like twice the size of a maximum resolution JPEG and even more sometimes, but RAW isn’t an image format as such that you can open up in a standard program. Basically a RAW file is the information that came directly from your sensor, un-compressed and generally (unless you’ve applied changes in-camera which defeats the object somewhat) un-processed. When you open up the file in your RAW editor, basiclly the computer re-constructs the image from the RAW data as it would be before the camera compresses and converts it to a JPEG, meaning you get much more data to play with when you edit. This means when you apply changes to saturation, contrast, brightness, sharpness, etc, it’s done BEFORE conversion to JPEG, so you maintain the absolute highest quality possible for your final image, and the only thing you generally need to do to your final JPEG photo is down-size it.
Doesn’t the S2-IS have the option to shoot RAW?
Anyway… It’s 02:46am… Why on Earth am I sitting here writing stuff about cameras?! Ah I know, because I’m sad, and ever so slightly obsessed. 🙂

i dont have a fiscal position that would favour the purchase of a DSLR, and so have not ventured into that realm….yet!:D i currently use a canon powershot S2. its a good camera, nice big lens and high optical zoom. i have heard RAW is a good format for editing, but the files are huge! (this last bit of info gatehred from adam dowley!

thanks paul! as per the concorde shot, i was experimenting with different white balances…i thought this one (tungsten) was interesting, and kind of gave a blue sky type illusion along with fog. with automatic, the shots looked good but a bit dull.
Sam
Good thinking! 😉 I’ve changed the colour temperature to achieve certain effects before, but never on an aviation shot. That may be someting for me to try!
What kind of camera do you use? If you have one that can shoot RAW, give that a go. You can adjust the colour temperature (white balance) when you’re editing, and it gives much more scope for creating effects like you have on the Concorde shot.

wow Sam! I love the Dragonair sunset shot! very nice indeed:)

Was your camera set to auto-white balance for the Concorde shot? If so it looks like the fog confused it a little! 🙂
Good work there, despite poor conditions. The 747 heading into the sunset’s a cracker!
