dark light

a funny question

just a thing that came into my mind what if when you boarded a aircraft would make you get up and leave and decide not to fly .
2 years since we were all flying back from sandford florida and when the 747 pushed back off the gate there was a bang and all lights went out and there was a smell of burning but then light on 1 side of plane came back on the steward then informed us there was a blown fuse but for all the flight the right side of plane had no power, lights earphones ect .now i think if we had not pushed back i could have chose to leave the plane i know a few made there concerns heard to stewardess

I was in Lisbon Portugal in 1979 or 1980 after delivering a Canso there from Norway for maintenance work. I was scheduled to leave on a Transworld 707 (I think that is what is was) for the flight to New York. When I got to my window seat and looked out the window and what I saw scared the crap outta me and I don’t scare easily. I walked back off the aircraft and up the jetway and told the company representatives that I was not going to be flying on that aircraft. There was the expected reaction and the expected question of “what makes you an expert on aircraft condition?” to which I replied “as an aircraft maintenance engineer I had a whole lot better understanding of aircraft condition than a F’ing ticket pusher!”

They had to offload my bags – very unhappy people that did that – and I took the next flight which was a 747 – the aircraft made it (the 707 that is) so I guess I was wrong —- Maybeeee – but then again maybe not.

In 35 years it was the only aircraft that I refused to fly in because of its’ condition – there was a couple of times that I refused to fly with certain crews that seemed to have a deathwish. I don’t think you would want to do it on a regular basis!!!!

How relieved was I that our flights were switched to EVA Air after booking to fly with Phuket Air? No chance I was flying with them! The reports about them in the Thai press were astounding!

Interesting – like the Phuket Air incident in (was it?) Dubai last year when the passengers stood up and tried to stop the aircraft on takeoff.

I must admit, I’ve sometimes wondered at what point a passenger could legally demand to be let off a flight. I guess the captain has the final say, and once airborne he/she wouldn’t turn back for some trivial or unjustified reason. But supposing they’d just closed the cabin doors and were about to push back when someone panicked or something and demanded, really demanded, to be let off? Or during taxiing, or lining up for takeoff?

1) I did actually find the question funny, as per your title.
2) I was refering to the air steward in question.

Thanks

i thought this was a airline forum the question i asked was to start a thread about safety on airlines a peoples personal views of what make them them feel safe in the air or not .
the reason behind the thread was i have flown over 50 flights and the one i mentioned was the only flight i never felt over safe with .
but to be insulted by your replys is beyond me do you not want new members or only threads the old regulars start .
i would also ask grey area to take action against people who insult other members re forum rules thanks

Moderator Comment

I shall be very charitable indeed and assume that the “idiot” that LGKR refers to is the steward mentioned in FLYBYDONNI’s story……
