Ok guys here’s the new twist, you’ve just been given a decommissioned vessel from a major power, it has been stripped of all weapons and electronics and the engines aren’t in a good condition either.
The object of this task is to select the decommissioned unit you will take, decide to either upgrade the engines or replace them and fit the weapons and electronics.
As with the last excercise, you can only use what is currently available to your countries defence force and creative thinking is again encouraged and you may enter as many times as you like. People in major countries Like America and England, you may choose to accept something from one of the other major powers, I’m sure no one would knock back an offer of a Kirov class vessel 😉 You must also rename the vessel and provide a base for it on your current basing list. Bonus point for providing a pic! Finally after you have done all this, you must finally decide if you will accept any more of the class and upgrade them to the same specs and provide names for those you will accept (max of six vessels in total) and they must be available in your defence budget!
Here is my first call:
USS Cyclone, renamed HMAS Tracey (after the Cyclone that leveled Darwin on Christmas 1974, also keeps in mind the Cyclone spirit of the original name.
Engines:
I would keep two of the original Paxmans and replace the other two with ATG1500 gas turbines giving me a CODOG arrangement. I would also remove two of the props and shafts and just have two.

Props and shafts of the Cyclone Class
Electronics:
Surface search radar.
X band guidence radar for Harpoon missiles.
MX-20 FLIR turret
Towed Sonar
Navsat
Satcom
and some basic air search radar
Weapons:
8x Harpoon missiles in four twin under-over tubes (two each side)
1x Automated Bofors 40/60
2x 25mm Typhoon guns
1x Mk 10 Triple torpedo tube aft for Mk 46 torpedos
4x .50Cal Browning guns
1x Helo deck for operating an SH-2G
2x Carl Gustav MANPADS.
Options on the Fleet:
Yes I would take six, these would add a new level of defence to our RAN, particularly in the patrol zones where we have a problem with people smuggeling and FFV breaches.

USS Cyclone on Patrol
Names would be:
HMAS Tracy
HMAS Pacific Ocean
HMAS Indian Ocean
HMAS Gulf Of Carpenterria
HMAS Great Australian Bight
HMAS Bass Straight

Ok, here is what CHile has currently in its inventory in a total of:
Ships to be decomitioned (3 County & 3 Leander):
4 Barak (County)
2 SeaCat (Leander)
1 Phalanx (Leander)
Excocet 38MM
Excocet 40MM
Ships to be keept in service (T-22):
2 × Sea Wolf
Excocet 38MM
Ships to be comitioned in the coming years (2 M/2 L Class, 3 T-23):
Seawolf VLS (T-23)
Seasparrow (M/L Class)
Standard SM-1 MR (L Class)
4 goalkeeper (M/L Class)
Harpoon I/II (M/L Class)
Now:
The Excocets are going to be retired over the time to be changed to the Harpoon IIs (makes sence since most of the new units are equiped with them)
Excocets are still going to be used as part of the weapoms inventory for the Superpumas
As for the AA capabilitys:
The Seacat is defenetly going to be retired.
In stock there will be 4 Barak & 1 Phalanx.
The Planes for the T 22 are not completly clear. It is thought to be installed one gun & as you said, the option for renewal of the Sea Wolf are whide.
As for what I have heard so far the idea would be to sell the Baraks & install eather the ESSM or the RAM on the T 22 ( & posibly changing the Sea Sparrow in the M Class to ESSM to in the future).
Also the T 22 would recive the Phalanx.
Finaly the option is analiced to install CIWS on the 3 T 23 which could be eather the Goalkeeper, Phalanx or RAM.

“It’s about opening your mind and thinking about what you would like to see in your navy”
The problem is my navy and the navies of most developed countries around the world would not spend money on upgrading an old decom. ship when it would be cheaper to build or buy a new ship. Only less developed countries that do not have access to new technology or money to spend on new ships would take old hulls and upgrade them with their systems. I hope you like this idea better than my last.
If Russia did gift their two decom. Moskva Class Helicopter Cruisers to North Korea I think North Korea would use one of the hulks for spares and the other hulk would be updated to this standard.
Amphibious Fire Support / Assault Ship.
*Displacement: 19,000 + tons
*Weapons: Two twin 170mm Koksan cannon mounts in the “A” and “B” position, Two 48-cell 240mm multiple rocket launch systems in the “C” Position, Four M-1990 4-barrel 30mm gatling gun mountings on each corner of the super structure, & Four M-1983 4-barrel 14.5mm AA heavy machine gun mountings.
*Aviation: Ten Mi-17 assault helicopters
This upgraded ship would be re-named Mount Paekdu after the birth place of Dear Leader Kim Jong-II. This ship would be tasked with amphibious Fire Support & helicopter assault. In time of war she would leave her base at Namp’o on the Yellow sea with her task force of transport, fire support, and assault craft. The invasion force would head south and land troops on South Korean territory. Mount Paekdu would provide shore bombardment with her multiple 170mm mounts and multiple rocket systems. She would also deploy her ten armed and fully equipped Mi-17s. These helicopters would deploy 300 of North Korea’s best Marines and then provide air support with unguided rockets and heavy machine guns.
“They were notoriously bad sea boats!”
Of course they were bad sea boats! Look who built them!

There was some indication that Type 23 deal includes some equipment and a spare gun to be used on the sole Type 22. Alternative was getting a Vickers (now done by BAE and others) Mk 8 from Brazil. Whole fleet outfit would be 4 vessels with Oto Melara and 4 with Mk 8.
Forrestin: In 2004 there was a decision to keep Exocet MM40 and maybe go for for Block III upgrades. Has this now been dropped? Makes sense with Harpoon Block coming online really. Also, air defence missile situation getting a bit complicated, Barak in inventory, VL Mica, ESSM and Seawolf Block II were competing for refit on Type 22 and now RAM?
If somebody is after other big amphibious units: USS Belleau Wood (LHA 3) decommissioned last October after 27 years service, and LHA 2 (Saipan) probably next.

What ships does the RAM equip in your navy mate? I guess the Phalanx is going to equip the Type 23 when she finally gets there as well as the two Type 22’s right? and the Dutch vessels have the Oto gun but the Brittish ships have the Vickers, will they have a standard oto fit as I susspect or will they keep their guns?
By: Forestin - 25th February 2006 at 06:26
BTW: of course the Phalanx RAM can be replaced with the standart RAM & the Goalkeeper with the Phalanx CIWS 😉
By: Forestin - 25th February 2006 at 06:23
The Supepuma is the standar Embarct Air Unit in the Chilean Navy, so zes. Also Chile has just adquired a 1st bunch of 20 Harpoon IIs (which will start to replace the Excocets).
Finaly Chile doesn’t owne right now the Phalanx Ram, but talks are underway, with the least to get the standart RAM.
By: Ja Worsley - 25th February 2006 at 05:00
Forestin: Mate that would have to be the most comprehensive refit I have ever seen, full points on the effort!
Does your country however, have access to the Phalanx/RAM combo? Also do you already have harpoons in your inventory? I never said anything about the aircompliment did I but do you have the Super Puma’s in stock already?
Jonesy: mate I must admit it did give me a giggle or two, but it sorta defeats the spirit of the game.

For my money I thought Nelson’s suggestion was effing hilarious!. Would pay real money to see a ‘Moskva nouveau’ try and handle the waters round there. First good Pacific storm and the things would go right over!. They were notoriously bad sea boats!
Tremendous stuff!. :diablo:
Ok guys here’s the new twist
You got to admit Ja – he gave it a twist all right!!! 😀
By: Ja Worsley - 24th February 2006 at 05:33
Nelson: mate it’s cool, I’m just trying to see what people come up with for their own navies not giving an upgraded ship away to some other navy to use
By: J33Nelson - 24th February 2006 at 04:58
First you say;
“People in major countries Like America and England, you may choose to accept something from one of the other major powers, I’m sure no one would knock back an offer of a Kirov class vessel You must also rename the vessel and provide a base for it on your current basing list.”
Then you say;
“It’s about opening your mind and thinking about what you would like to see in your navy, now unless you live in North Korea, or Taiwan in the other thread, please don’t comment on another country!
I was opening my mind to what I would like to see in other navies!
I apologize if you think I am destroying your threads.
By: Ja Worsley - 24th February 2006 at 04:34
Nelson; mate do you really have to ruin everything like this? Seriously this isn’t about fixing capatilits against communists, one side against the other. It’s about opening your mind and thinking about what you would like to see in your navy, now unless you live in North Korea, or Taiwan in the other thread, please don’t comment on another country!

Russia gifts their two Moskva Class Helicopter Cruisers to North Korea and they upgrade them to this standard:
*Displacement: 19,000 + tons
*Propulsion: Four high pressure steam boilers rated at 100,000 hp in total.
*Speed: 31 knots
*Weapons: One 170mm Koksan cannon, Six S-300F vertical launch SAM system (48 vertical launch missiles), Six 8-cell Klinock vertical launch SAM systems, Four Kashtan gun/missile CIWS, & Two 8-cell Uran SSM launchers.
*Aviation: Six Mi-24 helicopters & Six Mi-28 helicopters
Take that you capitalist pigs!

I know. JA wrote; “2x Carl Gustav MANPADS.”
Carl Gustav is an anti-tank weapon like you point out but the RBS-70 is a MANPADS. I am assuming JA meant to write RBS-70 instead of Carl Gustav.
Ok, sometimes I get the wrong end of the stick.
By: J33Nelson - 23rd February 2006 at 04:14

I know. JA wrote; “2x Carl Gustav MANPADS.”

P.S. Are there six decom. Osprey class ships? I thought the Philippines were getting all the Ospreys that the USA was discarding.
By: Ja Worsley - 23rd February 2006 at 04:13
That’s and we’ve been using then on our LPA’s as a means of bolstering our defences on these ships up in the Gulf
By: Arabella-Cox - 23rd February 2006 at 04:04
Do you mean RBS-70??
No, Carl Gustav is an anti-tank weapon.
