A lunchtime teaser

I wanted to see it sitting on the ground and painted in the colours and markings of Pierre Closterman.

Which aircraft am I talking about?

Well, not full-size but Pierre Clostermann’s Le Grand Charles in 1/4-scale. Built and flown by Sivert Bjork in Sweden.

Can’t recall where the action took place – pretty sure it was in German territory at the time – definitely ’45.

A 335 was found at Rheims after the war. “Winkle” Brown went over to fly it back. I suppose it could have been seen flying from there.

I’ve read The Big Show numberous times, and can recall quite distinctly the comment that it had a “cruciform tail”.

He certainly did encounter the Ta152, well, according to the book, anyway, but these are far more ‘ordinary’ looking compared to the Do335.

Perhaps he encountered one on a test flight?

Hello Macky42

It’s been a while since I’ve read The Big Show but are you thinking about the Ta-152 he encountered. If memory serves right it managed to out run some P-51s’ that were after it as well.

Anne

I like the Target Tug scheme although I’m not too sure about hanging it from the roof!

I read his autobiography many years ago, and I’m sure there was a passage in it about an encounter with a German aircraft, which from the description could only have been a Do335 Pfeil. Everything else I’ve read about this aircraft says it was never encountered operationally by allied aircraft. Am I remembering this correctly, and does anyone know any more about it?

I’m opting for a Tempest, but here’s a Spit IX replica – F-WGML – painted in Clostermann’s markings.

Well,

Mr Clostermann is famous for flying his Tempest V, but also flew Spitfire V & 1X’s too. In Algeirs he flew Tomcats (the French name for the T6) & the Max Holst Brousard.

So any one of those I guess.
