I picked up the box set of Warbird Over Wanaka DVD’s today (covering the shows from 1998, 2000 and 2002). I have just watched the 1998 one (I’d not seen any of these before) and on the end is some ‘bonus footage’.
Herein was, for me, a real magic moment. Two of the greatest P40 pilots of all time, Geoff Fisken – the RNZAF’s top soring pilot of the Pacific campaign – and the late, great Mark Hanna.
Mark interviewed Geoff on flying the P40 (and Buffalo) against the Japanese. This takes place in front of the former-OFMC P40E, which was painted as Geoff’s plane at the time. Just magic.
Mark was a fantastic interviewer, I guess because unlike most TV people he knew his stuff and had a genuine interest. I wish there had been more of the interview on this DVD.
It is sad to think the elder of the two is still with us, and the younger isn’t. RIP Mark Hanna.
