A modelling question

Im thinking of building the Trumpeter 1/48 Wellington MK3,which according those in the know is a superb kit.
My question is,what differences are present to represent a MK X?.

The use of a newly developed light alloy, DTD 646, allowed strengthening of the Mk X structure without much need for redesign. The gross weight was increased by 2,000 lbs. Externally the Mk X differed from the Mk III with longer carburettor intakes and larger spinners over Rotol propeller hubs. Some Mk Xs used de Havilland propellers with smaller hubs. Beam guns and large tailplanes were fitted. (Don’t know if the Trumpeter Mk III has the broad chord tailplanes – if not try A2Zee models http://www.a2zeemodels.co.uk/wellington-tailplane-4617-p.asp ). Cabin and starboard nose windows fully enclosed. Rear gun turret initially FN20A, FN120 or FN121 units fitted to later aircraft. New radio and navigational equipment resulted in aerial installation changes or additions. During production a new rudder and elevator with different shape horn balance introduced. Twin windscreen wipers fitted. More efficient heating system installed resulting in both exhausts being fitted with barbed flame dampers.

Nice one,web search only came up with the intakes and a mention of two styles of exhaust.
They had different engines hence the intakes, but no mention of props and windows.
I want to mark up as MF509.

Sorry it has taken so long to reply, I am planning to do the same thing myself.

Externally, the main differences are ;- broad (Jablo?) prop blades-these are include in the kit , but seem a little narrow to me , the rear side widows are the same but ther are often additional windows over the wings , the intakes on top of the engine- These intakes are the long type similar to those fitted to Beaufighter X’s & Halifax III’s. I also believe that the Mk X had “porcupine” exhausts to both engines with hot-air ducting pipes to the rear, giong up at an angle into the wings.

There is a photo on the “demobbed” web site- www.demobbed.org of Hendon’s T.10 which show some of these features. Many years ago Squadron Signal books Produced a Wellington reference book as part of their “WALKAROUND ” series.

As both Italeri and Revell recently did 1/72 scale MK X Wellington kits, it may be worth a look at these kits as another point of reference.

All the best, and please let us see the finished model.

regards Rad
