The restoration of the Highland Aviation Museum Hawker Hunter F.1 WT660 has now commenced, to be finally repainted in the scheme she wore while part of the Day Fighter Leader School at West Raynham in the mid 1950s.
While most of the gloss colours are still available in BS381C, such as Dark Sea Grey 638, Dark Green 241, Roundel Blue 110, and Signal Red 537, the RAF Aluminium paint, often called ‘High Speed Silver’ is more difficult to copy.
Has anyone managed to find a good modern equivalent of RAF Aluminium paint?
Also, does anyone know which code letter WT660 carried while serving with the DFLS?
Many thanks in advance!

Many thanks gents – the silver on G-KAXF does look very close. There are large areas of the original Aluminium paint on WT660 to compare it with…

50’s aluminium colour
I’ve found that Ford Moondust is a pretty good match for the old silver (which was variable anyway). Straight from the can it dries to a nice satin sheen just like the original. It can, of course (and is, on cars), be sprayed with clear gloss lacquer afterwards if that’s the finish you want.
I went through quite a lot of modern silver colours armed with an original fresh-from-the-box silver painted aircraft part from the 50’s and it’s close enough for me.
I intend to do a Mk.8 Meteor with it.

Silver
Hi Al
Having done our own Hunter KAXF. Provosts MOOS & KAPW, Gnat TIMM and Jet Provost AOBU in underside or overall silver, we found a convincing match and finish with Ford silver fox in cellulose covered in two pack lacquer.
Happy spraying;)

The best match I have found stated is FS 17178. However I have not personally tried it.

Al – finding a colour match is one issue.
A second one is bloom.
I have tried a few and the aluminium flake often comes to the surface and it is then difficult to paint anything on top that does not subsequently contaminate or fail.
