A monumental success at Shoreham today!

Here are just a few photos from the signing event held at The Shoreham Aircraft Museum today.

The event was a great success, much better than we had hoped, with just over £2,300 being raised for the London Battle of Britain Monument. Our grateful thanks go out to Bob Doe, Nigel Rose, Tony Iverson, and Mike Croskell for being there. I think we can safely say that they had a great time.

I’ve long wanted to meet Bob Doe, so today was something that I will certainly remember. Highlight of the day for me though was Nigel Rose shaking ME by the hand and thanking me. Tony, Bob, Nigel & Mike, it is I who should be thanking YOU.

The museum also had a record number of visitors – including Steve Young and Macky42.

Photo 1 – The queue of people waiting to get their various items signed.
Photo 2 – (LtoR) Bob, Mike, Tony & Nigel hard at work.
Photo 3 – A young lad has his day made.
Photo 4 – Ditto for a slightly older young lad (Steve Young)

Great pics Geoff, thanks very much to you and the Shoreham folks for putting the day on. A quick word about the museum; what a fascinating little treasure trove of history! From uniforms and models, to major parts recovered from digs and scrapyards (including the windscreen frame from Armin Faber’s Fw190!), and even a significant piece of Black Six. And what a warm welcome from everyone there on my first visit to Shoreham – it won’t be my last!

Geoff mentions that over £2300 was raised towards the memorial, and that reminds me of a comment Bob Doe made when he was told how much had been raised. “Well, I’m glad I was able to give a little help”. Such a modest comment from a man who has already given much more than any of us ever could.

And nice to see that he insisted on fortifying himself with a little scotch while his colleagues stuck to water. What a marvellous character, I feel very priveleged to have been there to meet him.

it’s crammed with fascinating artifacts, many with personal stories related to them.

As I explained to Nigel Rose, when showing him around the museum, our aim at Shoreham is to where we can tell the story of those involved with the relics we have on display, in the aircraft and on the ground. For example, one display contains an account by a Bf109 pilot of his last flight which ended with him force-landing in Kent, together with an eyewitness account from a civilian on the ground who saw him force-land. Including photos of those involved is also important to us as well. Our aim is to ensure that the aircrew & civilans don’t just become names on a display board.

Geoff.

A memorable day for me, a pleasure to see these ‘few’ fine men, and to make my small contribution to the memorial.
Good to meet Steve and yourself also!

May I recommend this museum to anyone who’s in the area. Small it may be but it’s crammed with fascinating artifacts, many with personal stories related to them.
