This recently came into the museum. The size is about that of a 50kg bomb.
Any help would be much appreciated.

IIRC Mel Smith & Griff Rees Jones did a sketch on their TV show where they phoned the police claiming there was a body buried in their garden so that the Police dug it over searching for the body, thus saving Mel & Griff from having to dig over the garden?

You could call the police and say that there’s a bomb in your garden. They will contact you then!! 😀
Sorry, can’t help you with a serious answer.

Notdienst,
That’s what I’m thinking, so its nice to see I’m not the only one.
This is a good website re German bombs http://www.warbirdsresourcegroup.org/LRG/bombs.html
But look here for info on the SD50 with the type II one-piece cast magnesium alloy tail http://www.warbirdsresourcegroup.org/LRG/sd50.htm
Does anyone have, or know of any, good pix of a Type II tail for an SD50?
And welcome to the Forum 🙂

Looks like a Type 2 SD 50. One-piece construction, cast magnesium alloy. Fins should be 26-27cm apart at their widest.

Any idea what the casing is made of? It looks like magnesium in the pic.

Well, I need to eat a big bowl of humble pie:o
First of all, SB was the designator for the bomb rack. Not the bomb. SB50 was the rack capable of carrying 50kg bombs.
The bombs were SC50, which was a general purpose bomb. The SD50 was a fragmentation bomb, in generally the same body as the SC50.
The photo is of neither of these bombs. The tailfins of the german bombs extended further aft from the body.
Should have checked the documents BEFORE relaying on memory and posting:o

Thanks galdri.
I’ve looked through the section in ‘The Blitz, then & now’ on German bombs, but the tail cones seem to stop close to the ‘leading’ edge of the fins. On this bomb the casing continues forwards. How far we don’t know as this has been blown off. It seems to me to therefore be in one piece, rather than a tail unit that was attached to a bomb. Most of the 50kg bombs also seem to have grooves in the fins, maybe to make them more rigid, which this one doesn’t have.
The only possible I can see is the SD50 medium cased bomb, which is the only German bomb I’ve seen where the tail section continues forward of the fins enough to match what we have. Does anyone have some good pix of SD50s?

Looks German, and if it is from a 50 kg bomb it would be called SB 50 IIRC. Used, among other things, on the underwing stations on the Ju-87 Stuka
