Hello,
I am trying to identify a mystery Spitfire and (more importantly) the last pilot who flew it. It came down about two months after Lancaster DV382 in Upwaltham, that would make it about April 1944 onwards. I have spoken to many witnesses, none of whom could give me a precise month, let alone a date. I have bought every book I can think of, including all of Andy Saunder’s, Fighter Command Losses, small local books, but I cannot find out any record of it. In Bombers over Sussex there is a Spitfire mentioned in the very approximate area (Lavington) dated 3/4/44, but no details. Hendon couldn’t come up with anything on that date. Someone, who was a schoolboy at the time, has given me some parts he recovered at the time (a popular occupation)
and there are some numbers. Attached are two scans of parts. The first is an ID plate for the engine speed indicator, the second is an alloy plate with the following number stamped on it; 3513825187j1H. Is there any information I can glean from these numbers about the ID of the aircraft? Does anyone have any information on this story?
Thanks
AK

Hi,
thanks to all of you so far. I have been looking at the flap that might be from a camera access port and it has another number on it
38 627 40DHV
Any ideas?
Thanks

I have all details, Police reports etc.
E-mail me via the link at the foot of this post.

Mystery Spitfire
Hello Nachtjagd,
thank you for doing that. Lavington is very much over the hill from where this came down, according to my witnesses this one came in upside down and created a large moonlike crater. Another Spitfire came down over the hill and I think this is the Lavngton one. Thank you very much for asking your friend though.

I just showed this to an ex RAF friend who used to live in the Petworth area. He says your Spitfire crashed near the present day entrance to Lavington (?) School (or college). He thinks the local air cadets used to have an instrument said to be from that plane but I guess probably not after all these years. The Spit is supposed to have burned out (but maybe not that badly if these souvenirs could be found).

the access door looks like the camera access door (to replace the magazine – on top of port wing by the root). As Peter says, it could be from any mark from MkVII onwards. Any other bits?

Hi earthling.
Welcome to the forum.
351 refers to a Spitfire MkVII, although that depends if you are looking at a part number or something else, it also doesn`t necessarily follow that the aircraft was a Spitfire VII, as the same parts were used on other marks.
There are people on here far more qualified to comment on Spitfire part numbers!
I`ve attached a photo of what the engine speed indicator would have looked like.
