A naval Warhawk?

I found these rare and amazing photos showing Curtiss P-40 Warhawk on the deck or operating on aircraft carriers. There was a naval version of this fighter? To see the photos, visit the link below:

Best Regards!

Thanks guys. Never heard of Operation Highjump until now. Looks like at least this pampa’s thread turned into something useful ;).

Quite possibly taken on USS Philippine Sea (CV47) while it was Detailed to Operation Highjump 1946-1947. Six R4D-5Ls using JATO bottles took off from the portion of the flight deck forward of the island (~240 feet). This was in support of Admiral Byrd’s expedition.

that’s the one! Here some more pics

Good question, I’ve never seen that.
Probably 1946 or early 47 since the US insignia lacks the red bars, also there is a Sikorsky HO3S (S-51/H-5/Dragonfly) in the background.
The red markings might mean the aircraft were headed to the Antarctic since the USN supported an expedition there during that period and both a.c. types were used on it.

^ Now THAT’s interesting. The setting, the paintschemes. What’s the story behind it?

Rather like the RAF Spitfires being transported to Malta and flown off RN and USN carriers, P-40s were transported to North Africa for the invasion and flown off carriers.

You’ve got to give it to the OP, he has the ability to find old odd stuff and makes it seem new.
Through his postings on various forums he must find enough newcomers that have never seen the stuff to make it worth his while.
And I notice he’s back to asking questions, the answers to which he never acknowledges.

IIRC, he’s already offered the P-51s on carriers, possibly the C-130 as well. The U-2 will probably be next or the Neptunes. 🙂

And the original is even older than that:

Curtiss P-40 Aircraft Carrier

Which, to be fair, doesn’t imply a naval Warhawk like the title of this thread – just as well since many of the images are actually P40s being transported on carriers, although there are some images of them being catapulted, etc.
