Do you think that in the near future we could see a new airport opening in the Plymouth area?

No. I don’t see it happening. Plymouth does have huge potential for air travel, large population, it is a long way from everywhere, there is no motorway link, only average rail connections etc etc.
Trouble is PLH is too small and has no room to expand and there doesn’t seem to be anywhere else to put an airport. Sutton Harbor Holdings (owners of PLH) did put forward a plan to build a new airport between Exeter and Plymouth replacing both EXT and PLH. Oddly enough people weren’t too happy about it, especially those in Exeter!
Personally I think they should build a floating airport like Osaka Kansai (KIX) in Japan. That would solve all the problems but I am not sure that the likes FlyBe or Easyjet could bring in enough money to make it worthwhile. Realistically these are the kinds of airlines that would use a larger airport in Plymouth Shame really, but Plymouth city council really got it badly wrong in the 1960’s when planning Plymouths airport.
At least things have got a lot better with Air Southwest and Air Wales making the best out of a bad job.
