A new date for your diary

Britain will be marking the 60th anniversary of the end of WW2 on July the 10th next year. 😮
So it doesn’t clash with the holidays. 🙁 See:- http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=325559&in_page_id=1770&in_a_source=

I think I’ll still commemorate on the old dates.

Hi Andy,
I take on board your views but I’m sorry but it still angers me.
Yes I’ll mark the separate days but I remember veterans every day, not just from the Second World War but from other conflicts too.
We need to move on, but for us to grow as a nation we need to learn from our history. Thats why I thought that next year would be probably the final big commeration, simply as the veterans are getting older, and we are at peace within Europe, so why continue to remind our now friends in Germany that we were once enemies?

Hi Snaps
Well tomorrow I’ll certainly be remembering a veteran as my 82 year old father visits on a Thursday.
We usually have a cup of Tea after lunch and invariably the subject turns to the events between 1939 and 1945. He’s such a voracious reader you see.
Last week it was the Italian navy he was reading about. Being a 8th army veteran his opinion of Italian fighting prowess is not high and his opinions are not always expressed in what today would be considered the most politically correct manner.
But we lend each other books and trade what we know.
I once asked him why he volunteered for the Suffolk Regiment on his 18th birthday expecting a heroic response only to be told he was sick of working in a bloody shoe factory!

Lest we Forget.
Andy

PS I’m also sure that if we had a German veteran to hand Dad would be quite happily exchanging notes with him about WW2.

That’d be Johnny then…

July 10th. Didn’t we all know that already? I have known for ages. Thats Legends weekend, and also some major things are also planned on that date (of which I may be involved in on the fringes, and thus missing from DX on the Sunday). They should mark it with VJ Day – that was the end of the war. ****ing politicians. For once the Daily Indignant makes a sensible statement.

To quote a great social commentator from a modern beat combo… “Ever feel you’ve been cheated?”

No, not the July date (as an Aussie in England I’ve long got used to the ~IMHO~ mispriority of VE Day over the war’s real end, VJ Day – It wasn’t over till the fighting stopped) but the fact that, yet again, we are invited by a tabloid newspaper short of real news to become incenced over a non-event.

I think this one will go the way of the ‘EEC Banana’ and other great British newspaper ‘stories’. Breathe out, move on, make your own commemoration as you see fit when you see fit. If you need to follow Bush, Blair and Betty to honour your fallen, then that’s a loss to those who made the sacrifices. Just my opinion!

Cheers

Well you’re all ranting away because the ‘Daily Comic’ has got the bit between it’s teeth about the Government again.
What do you all propose?
I have no problem with this.
A day of rememberance on July 10th falls between VE day and VJ day.
As far as I’m concerned Government is making some effort to mark the end of WW2.
I have no doubt that some official commemoration ceremonies will be held on that day, which will no doubt include senior members of the Government and The Royal Family.
As far as the incident mentioned in the rag about the memory of Lt Robert Gray being insulted by this date is nothing short of cr*p and a perfect example of the sort of thing this rag is famous for.

Mark the day people, and on that day go and find a veteran and talk to them.
Cheers
Andy

Well, the last time a group like this had a disaggrement with Parliament we ended up with another new holiday, the 4th of July. Everyone here is coordially invited to join in the festivities next year. Just think of it as Guy Fawkes Day, but with Red Coats instead of Catholics.

I just feel so angry and sad. Ok time has moved on, but next year would have probably been the last time that we would have really commerated VE and VJ day.

As I’ve said in posts before I am very lucky that in my line of work (the nursing profession) I have met some wonderful people, and had some very interesting history lessons from those that were there.

My thanks as always goes to those men and women that fought for our freedom. You are not forgotten, your memory still lives on.

Take care,

Snaps.
If more people like us, spoke up, we wouldn’t need to get angry..

Take care.

TO QUOTE SNAPS

“Has this Government got any respect left for those that fought for this country? And of course, for those that continue to do so? (but that’s another subject altogether)”

MY REPLY………..

This bunch of w—-rs in government now care for nothing but themselves.
Its time for a cull in the upper echelons of this Great Country of ours – (Yours and Mine) not only the A—–les in power.
To all who paid the ultimate price – God Bless you All.
To those who survive – I thank you.
To the polliticians – SOD OFF AND ROT.

This is just totally unbelievable. Coherant words are beyond me right now!
Don’t some of us have enough of a struggle getting our kids taught about the Second World war in the first place at some schools. I know some are better than others, but my neice has learnt about the Romans for 4 years now – she asked her history teacher about the Second World War as she knew a veteran, who lives locally and she was given a detention for questioning her elders!

My neices face when she met some of the Battle of Britain veterans a couple of months ago was an absolute picture. She thanked them for what they did, and asked them questions that they have heard time and time again, but each of the veterans took the time to talk to her, a memory she will, and does cherish.

How can this Government have the gall to change these historical dates? For their holiday! 🙁 As I said I’m so angry. I guess I will try and resolve this in my own way, by marking the occassion in some way at work, as I look after some wonderful people. How am I going to tell them tomorrow that their anniversary as they know it, doesn’t exist next year? Good job those brave men and women did not have the same attitude 60 years ago.

Has this Government got any respect left for those that fought for this country? And of course, for those that continue to do so? (but that’s another subject altogether)

Sorry this is a long reply but this is something I feel very strongly about, as you can probably tell 🙂
