A new date in aviation history…

OCTOBER 25TH 2007…the first commerical flight of the Airbus A380!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6949136.stm

Despite all the delays and media hype, does anyone think that once the aircraft has flown for a couple of months, we will see a few more orders at all or could it still be the big white elephant that some analysts have talked about?

So given the nature of the ticket sale, can this really be considered as the first revenue flight of the A380 ?

They have put a whole bunch of various business and economy tickets up now, although all still pricey.

Unfortunately, the fact that this date is a good 2 years later, will overshadow the fact that it’s in service.

Two years!? Hell, I didn’t know they were scheduled for delivery in 2005 already.

there we go:

Singapore Airlines had been receiving several requests from aircraft enthusiasts across the world for a seat on the inaugural passenger flight of the A380. Since there was a huge rush for the tickets, the airline thought of capitalizing on the rush and doing something or charity form the proceeds, said Singapore Airlines in a statement.

Tickets will open for bidding on E-Bay’s Singapore web site http://www.ebay.com.sg/ in August. The ticket auction proceeds will be split into three and the proceeds will go to Singapore’s Community Chest Sydney, Children’s Hospital at Randwick, and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, both in Sydney Médecins Sans Frontières, also known as Doctors Without Borders.

ExxonMobil is donating aviation fuel for the return flight. PayPal and E-Bay are giving discounted rates for the auction.

The lowest price for a single round-trip ticket from Singapore to Sydney costs S$900 (US$597) on the Singapore Airlines Web site. However, that price is only valid until Sept. 30.

And earlier this year protesters temporarily blocked the delivery of an A380 wing by seizing a barge carrying the part.

Mistake or error, this happen this week and was more like a sit in

A class beyond first??

The Australian

SYDNEY will be the destination for the first commercial flight of the world’s largest airliner, the Airbus A380.

The Singapore Airlines plane will fly from Singapore to Sydney on October 25.

“Everyone at Singapore Airlines is keenly anticipating the delivery of this new plane, and our people are working hard on final preparation for its entry into service,” CEO Chew Choon Seng said in a statement.

“The first flight promises to be one of the most exciting occasions in aviation history.”

Tickets for the flight are being auctioned online from August 27 with the proceeds going to three charities.

The plane will be unveiled at Airbus headquarters in Toulouse, France, on October 15.

Singapore’s announcement comes after multiple delays at Airbus pushed the delivery of the plane back about two years at the same time as rival Boeing was taking a record number of orders.

And earlier this year protesters temporarily blocked the delivery of an A380 wing by seizing a barge carrying the part.

Three classes of travel will be available on the A380 – the standard economy and business along with a new class called Singapore Airline Suites, described by the company as “a class beyond first”.
Regular A380 flights between Sydney and Singapore will follow soon after, the airline said.

Yes, knowing a few people who have flown on the 380 I’d say most definately yes.
Just wish I was well enough to bid for the tickets myself (see Singapore Website). Ebay auction starts 27th Aug.
