…she had found a photograph lodged behind the mirror of an old family wardrobe and was intrigued.
She had the shot copied at a local shop and sent it off the society inquiring of its origins and thinking it went back to WWII, albeit that it was a colour print.
The folded image and letter was sent to me for analysis and quickly it was apparent that the small serial MH434 was just visible and that this was a shot from the ‘Piece of Cake’ filming of 1988.
It transpired that the room with the wardrobe had been used by lodgers and clearly one of them had slipped this photograph behind the mirror.
Problem solved, but who can identify the location, the pyrotechnics and the bi-plane and did it make the small screen?

A Piece of Cake
A lot of the filming took place at the old Friston ‘D-Day’ airfield in East Sussex, where sets were put up and blown up along with dummy aircraft, this photo is not one of those sets.

According to the Scamble Airshow reports it could be Lakenheath 1988 as there was a Spitfire present and Stearman G-AROY

I think Stearman too. Only looking on my phone at mo but colours look like John Jordan’s G-AROY.

Rather than being from the filming, I would suggest that the photo was taken at a display around the time of “Piece of Cake”. The bouncy castle in the background might be a clue :diablo:
As for location..not sure, but I have a feeling that it’s a USAF base. Maybe Lakenheath? It just all those trees in the background look familiar.

Interesting picture.
Going by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piece_of_Cake_%28TV_series%29
It says some filming was done at South Cerney.
Without the aircraft in the picture, I would have guessed at Lakenheath or Bentwaters, but that would be highly doubtful.
Going by the bunker and wire fence, it looks like it was either an active, or recently de-activated military airfield.
I’m sure someone who was involved, will tell us the story behind the picture ?
