there are two Spits in Dutch AF colours, PV202/G-CCCA DX based, and newly restored SM520/G-ILDA Thruxton based.
and a pleasure to see the two together, i don’t suppose anybody know if SM520/G-ILDA is returning to DX ??????????????
i would have made a trip down to DX if i’d known, it’s a shame it did’nt stay for the weekend, a superb restoration and this is i believe it’s first outing away from Thrukkers.
going on from a previous thread it’s a pity ARCo are so private, it would have been a great idea to have a photo-opportunity Friday, drag out a couple of Spits, put the two two seaters together, perhaps a small fee, all towards a great cause, i’m sure there is quite a few on this forum who would be interested if it happened ??
any-road up, rant over, pictures looked good though….. 🙂
Not first outing from Thruxton – spent the tuesday and wednesday before at Goodwood, I believe it also visited Benson last week.

I believe it’s an old photo and the third of “A pair of Dutch Tr.IX Spitfires…” (sorry … 😮 … couldn’t resist) would be H97.

Isn’t this aircraft in Bonham’s next auction?
By the end of next month it might not even be in this country. 🙂

Would be nice to see this Dutch Spitfire in the country where it belongs.:)

ok, ok, point taken, but perhaps a little advance warning ??
as we all enthusiast’s ! or is it a need to know basis ??
it might have been a tad usefull to put a early warning on the Forum, or make it a day two affair ?? and then give us the chance to down tools and make the journey.
no offence just another opinion or am i a lone voice ?? 🙂
The only advance warning given to this occurence came in a phone call about 40 mins before the arrival, the company was aware that Dave and Peter hoped to bring the aircraft up to duxford for a visit at some point weather and aircraft permitting. to arrange a two day visit publically posted at such short notice is I am afraid to say totally non viable.
Sorry maybe later in the year.

Yes, taken at Eastleigh on roll-out of the Dutch 2-seat Spitfires. A lot of effort was taken by Classic Aero to get the scheme as accurate as possible to the original BS147, (with a little assistance with the stencilling and colours). I think they have made a great job and its a treat to see these shots of her together with PV202.
Ah hah!
Thanks for that.

maybe it is a idea to bring those two airframes too the Dutch Air Force open Days and do for ones a two-ship display.
I would love to see them

Which ones are they? The one that used to be painted in IAC colors? The other is a new restoration? What’s the reason for 2 being painted up?
SM520 is a new restoration from Airframe Assemblies & Classic Aero. Good job by all concerned.
Great to see IAC161 & SM520 together in matching colour schemes.

Actually that is exactly what we did do. The Thruxton aircraft was due to visit in the hands of David Ratcliffe (ARC pilot) and its current operator Peter Tuplin and the idea was to put both together for a one-off photo opportunity for both those of us inside the fence and those outside to see. There was nothing secret or private about it at all. Believe it or not we are enthusiasts ourselves and do our best to share an opportunity. At the same time it is a business and the area is on the live side of Duxford and therefore has no public admission. The event took place in full view of the gate that everyone usually congregates at by the 24 Alpha hold point and most of you have long lenses. It would have been much easier to leave the resident T9 in the T2 hangar where it normally resides wouldn’t it? Hopefully the majority will have enjoyed seeing the sight and the pictures that have been posted. I would think a lot of our friends in the Netherlands would have loved to witness such a sight, even from the public side of the fence. Imagine how I feel, I couldn’t be there due to an illness so I have only seen the pictures (plus a distant view of it from my garden as it departed) and I work there every day!!! 🙁

there was only 1 spitfire flying but there was 2 dutch painted ones in area 51.
curlyboy
There was one flying (in Dutch colours, as per pics) and 2 (other?) Dutch painted one? Or did one of the two in ‘Area 51’ then buzz off flying?
Or, in simple terms.
ARE-THERE-THREE-AIRWORTHY-TWO-SEAT-SPITS-CURRENTLY-IN-THIS-DUTCH-COLOUR-SCHEME?
Jeez, 12 posts in and it is still unclear

H-98 is the ex Irish Air Corps coloured machine.
H-99 is the new build from Classic Aero at Thruxton. Your’s for 1.5 million at Auction in April: http://www.bonhams.com/cgi-bin/public.sh/pubweb/publicSite.r?sContinent=EUR&screen=carsRAFSpitfire
