Chaps,
Does anyone fancy a “proper” days spotting at somewhere like Zurich or Amsterdam for an overnighter in a local hotel sometime in the summer? I am happy to take on the responsibility of organising it all right down to the fine details, but need to know if ….
1. anyone fancies it?
2. anyone has any suggestions for an airport to visit
What do we think? Let’s get some feedback in here so we can collectively see what our opinions are, perhaps then taking a vote on where and when to go if there is enough interest.
cheers
Chris.

Wanna email me with a preference me so I can start looking at some calendars and take this a bit further? cheers

I’m very interested in a DUS trip in August; I see that there’s no flight on a Sat so I assume that you’re looking at going on a Fri evening and returning Sun evening? Here’s some of the traffic to see there on a Saturday:
Delta B767(Only US carrier)
5 x LTU A330
5 x Turkish a/l B737, A321 & A330
14! x Onur Air, FLY air, Atlas, Inter a/l, Pegasus, Sun Express B737 & A321
Aeroflot Tu154 & A319
Pulkovo Tu-154, Siberia air B737, Carpatair S2000, Macedonian B737,
Air Via A320, JAT CRJ
Aegean B737
Emirates B777 & A330, Mahan Air A310, Egyptair A320,
Nouvelair A321, Tunisair B737, A320
Privatair A319On a Sunday:
Yet more Turkish a/l B737 & A321
Another 14 x Onur Air, Corendon, Sky, Atlas, Pegasus etc
Nordic MD90
Aeroflot Tu 154 & A319 , Pulkovo Tu154, Ural TU154, Air Via A320, Jat CRJ
African Safari A310
I was looking at midweek to be honest, that was much cheaper.
Doing something like arrive Tuesday night, stay over in hotel, spot/photo all day Wednesday then come home Wednesday night.
Looking about the same price for AMS or DUS, so I would be happy with either! I’m going to visit both this summer anyway :).

Problem with ****hole (sorry, Shiphol) is that you need a car, or a benevolent local with a vehicle, to get good photos – whilst the roof deck may appease a few, its really not the sort of location keen photographers would want to spend the day given the opportunities available elsewhere. Dusseldorf, on the other hand, is do-able without a vehicle. Also, having just arranged hotel accommodation for both airports for the late-May bank holiday weekend, DUS seems to have cheaper hotels – the Horrible (sorry, Holiday) Inn at DUS is pretty good value for a twin-room.

AMS is the eaiest and cheapest for most people i’m guessing. Its an excellent airport with very good shopping and if you get an early flight, its easy enough to have a morning in the city, then spend the afternoon at the airport. Leiden is only 20 mins on the train and is a lovely little city.

Well I can only do AMS really, as I have never been, and would love to go…so if you decide elsewhere, I will have to abstain I am afraid, but
As a side issue, I think we should look to organise a huge UK meeting at some point, as I am sure that there are members on here that would like to finally meet each other and put names to faces…but can’t afford the cost of air travel to European destinations (me included!) lol. Even if it was not at an airport, we could look to hire out a venue for an evening or something like that…? My student union allows private hire for about £400 a night, so if we managed to get say 150 people interested, it would work out at £3 per head, and another advantage is…cheap drinks (£2 a pint, usually, for those that are old enough of course!)

How about Frankfurt? A more expensive option, but good flight times from BHX, MAN and LON.
By: wannabe pilot - 24th April 2006 at 07:40
For those in the London area, DUS is £52 return for a daytrip on Air Berlin from STN. If you were to stay over the night, you’d be able to get a £1 fare each way which means it’s a total of £40.
My dilemma is this:
-I can’t do Thursdays or Saturdays in the Summer because of work.
-I can’t do any time in July
-In August I’m limited to 1st-6th and then 16th-19th and 29th-30th (all due to other commitments, or other trips that are boked).
So if anyone fancies looking at a calendar and seeing if there is a way around, then they’re welcome!

Sounds rather good eh chaps? I see there are EK777s there too! LOL…No escape!
This is deffo swinging to DUS now eh? If this is the case, do people want to fly staight to DUS and we all met there, or meet somewhere in the UK and then all go together? This would be a REAL challenge logistically, but worth a stab and I will co-ordinate it if people want….
Thoughts?

DUS sounds like an excellent option on a Jet2 757, me and Paul have considered there before!
Hmmmm…. £43 return including taxes in August… might book it whether you guys go or not! Just need to find a cheap hotel!

ahh yes – therein lies a small problemette!! hoho…
Do we have any other suggestions yet?
By: Humberside - 23rd April 2006 at 21:06
Ryanair do a flight from STN to DUS returning the next day for roughly £24 all up…. we love those 1p flights! 😀

All FR flights to Dusseldorf are (in typical Ryanair fashion) to Nidderhein Weeze Airport
By: CWBalmer - 23rd April 2006 at 20:47
Now we are swinging to DUS!! Any other takers or suggestions?
By: tenthije - 23rd April 2006 at 20:45
DUS is something that may be an idea during the world cup matches. If I am not mistaken there should be a few flights by Aeromexico (767+777). That alone is sufficient reason for me to go there.
By: dc10fan - 23rd April 2006 at 20:40
Dusseldorf is a good option; went there last year. Several good vantage points; rooftop terrace and another viewing terrace at the station near the runway threshold. Lots of German loco, Turkish and some rare East European traffic but not many large a/c; also not great for Lufthansa. Cologne is quite near though; about 45 mins by train.

Info on DUS can be read up on HERE for those that dont know much about it…. Ryanair do a flight from STN to DUS returning the next day for roughly £24 all up…. we love those 1p flights! 😀
AMS details HERE or more so HERE
ZUR details HERE
I know there are many other guides, but this is a good, reliable site.

Hi
Amsterdam, Dutch Beer and Schiphol Airport,KLM, & Martin Air what more would you want. I’ll be up for that, I think.
How about Dusseldorf Guys. All acounts it’s got two great spotting decks and that german beer sound like it’s really nice. It’s cheap as well from Leeds in July or August. £7.99p one-way with Jet2.com on a B757-200.
On a 757! That’s worth half the price itself.
Is DUS busy at all? That seems like an extremely good fare, a great flight and only the airport needs to impress.

The diff is this time though RIP is that it WILL come off!! Trust me on this!! There is a lot of AMS interest….
Dont spose any of the Mods would let us run a poll on this would they if we provided choices of AMS, ZUR, DUS, and say one other in Germany or say Spain to see what peeps fancy?
