Here is an image of an original photograph in my collection. I have had it for many many years and have no idea where it came from.
I tend to associate two blade Hurricanes with the ‘Battle of France’ and tropical filters with North Africa but here we have them in combination.
Can any Hurricane enthusiast shed any light?
The photograph was accompanied by the second shot of the Hudson VI EW942 of identical size and paper grade, Velox etc.
So we have two guys in shorts, tropical issue, one sporting a very greasy working coat. We have a Hudson with a US star but with an RAF serial that is being loaded or unloaded from a barge/tender in fairly rugged circumstances.
Egypt? Takoradi, Ghana? An MU?
Let’s discuss the possibilities.

Not sure if this has been mentioned before (a lot to wade through in 4 pages!) but there was a noticeable gap between the back of the prop and the front of the cowling on early Hurricanes… so it may not be a difference in diameter but a bit of ‘windage’ between prop and cowling (later closed up with the oil collector ring). This would seem to rule out a later airframe with an earlier prop because the ‘tolerance’ would not be apparent.

It looks like we have resolution.
Good stuff.

RAF Petak-Tekva AB
Hi Mark21
Will here it goes. The two photos are from Palestine around 1942-1943. RAF Petak-Tekva AB. The Hurricane belongs to an OUT unit stationed in the Air base and the Hudson to a Paratrooper school. That was operated by US/UK personnel (special operation branch).
All the best

Sorry to dig up an old thread but my ?th birthday present to myself arrived from South Africa today. “85 years of SAAF” by Winston Brent. And on subject of Mk1 Hurricanes reveals 2 bladed 274 (L1874) and 277 (L1909) were probably among 10 SAAF Mk1 Hurricanes which were flown to CARIO by pilots of No. 1 Sqn and handed over to No. 2 MU at Abu Sueir.

Mark12,
Did you know there are two photos of that same Hudson VI, EW942 of 267 Sqn Transport Command, being broken up at Khartoum in the December 1995 issue of Aeroplane Monthly, page 29.
I just happened on it whilst searching for something else and thought I’d check the serial against this thread. Low and behold they matched.
Cheers
Dave
Dave,
So it does. Well spotted.
The photo clearly confirms my posted shot as the ‘arrival in’, rather than ‘departure from’, service.
Thanks.

Closure
Well who would have thought that one ‘squidgy’ little Hurricane photograph would generate over 100 ‘on topic’ replies and over 2000 hits in just four days?
I enjoyed this one, and learnt a lot from it. Thank you. 🙂
On with the next photograph.

From page 141 of the Hawker hurricane by Mason
“the RAF Gladiator Sqn at Aden, No 94 SQn Commanded by Sdr Ldr Vernon Crompton Woodward, moved near to the Canal Zone to convert to Hurricanes and found themselves allocated 6 very tired Mark 1 Hurricanes disposed of by 1 Sqn SAAF”
Seems good to me….. 🙂

No need to speculate! That company still exists – http://www.vokes.com

Whether they made the air filter for the Hurricane I am not sure.
They certainly made filters for the Spitfire.
Mark
And Vokes made the special sand filter equipment as fitted to all desert theatre WD motorcycles.
My old BSA WD-M20 had a desert theatre fuel tank fitted, that had the special cut-out for the trunking from the carb up to the Vokes filter casing (a nasty sharp edged box sitting about 3-4 inches directly in front of your ‘delicate bits’ 😉 🙁 ) mounted on top of the tank.

Never trust my spelling! I got Volkes from the Squadron Signal book and it would not be the first time they had got somthing wrong. I’m quite happy with it being Vokes.

AFAIK, it’s Vokes.

Great thread! As a layman when it comes to Hurricanes I have certainly learned something.
Now OT, can you, native speakers, tell me what is the correct name of the filter fitted to Hurricanes?
That Vokes filter was first used by RAF operationally over Malta.
what looks like a Volkes filter fitted
B) BTW it is a Volke filter on 277 I have a much better copy of that photo in Springbok Fighter Victory and there is another photo showing 277 from the front with an identical Volkes Filter (to our mystery Hurricane) and 2 blade propellar (black with yellow tips)
