A question for all you photographers

As you may know I’m going to barcelona in a couple of weeks.
My problem is I’m taking 35mm film with me and I was wondering what. If anything the hand luggage scanners do to rolls of film. This is black and white and colour

Don’t know why…

Airport official (customs officer?): “Have you anything to declare?”

Goat: “Naaaaah!”;)

LOL. I get frisked eveery time I fly. Digital, of course, is not affected by x-rays. Yet another good reason to do away with film.

I have had no problems when producing a zip-lock bag with the film cannisters inside – not in their plastic drums (mind you it was a few years ago…).
I think you just like getting hand-searched because you enjoy being asked to bend over…;)

Bollox to the clear bag. Never once, since way before September 11th (there WAS security before that, at least in the UK) have I been able to obtain a handsearch.

Hand luggage, not hold baggage. Lead bags may be of use – they’ll ask you to take them out and they’ll look inside, or they’ll do that and still xray the films. hand baggage xray scanners are safe, and the effects are cumulative – I have passed velvia through 9 in succession, within 2 weeks, and had no effect at all. Don’t worry about it ruining your film, its an urban myth. High speed may have a slight fogging problem, but even 800 should be safe. If you fancy being a ******* at customs, take some infrared koday (EIR or HIE) and tell them it can’t be scanned and will have to be hand checked as it is specialist stuff. then relax and let the glove enter…..

if I need to remove the camera batteries while on the plane

This has never happened to me, but except to have to open the back of the camera for security, or to take a picture if there’s a film in it. And don’t set your hopes too high on escaping screening of your film by carrying them in a separate, clear bag. In my experience it doesn’t work anymore in our post-9/11 society.

All my films will be below 800 (the highest i usually go to is a 400) and it will live in my camera bag which I will keep with me on the plane. Any other things like if I need to remove the camera batteries while on the plane (I have and eos 3000n)

Hand carry it – if necessary put it in a clear zip-lock bag (for convenience, keeping them together) and pass them to the security officer for a hand-search if required.
How much are you taking? What speeds?
What gear are you taking? Always remember that if you take it you have to carry it (usually) and that you will regret it if you carry too much…

As long as it is below 800 ISO it will be safe. However if you put it in your suitcase instead of handluggage, prepare for the worse! BW Roger
