a question for any hurricane experts here

hi guys. Im doing some research into my brothers mother-in-laws uncle, a F/O Peter Danielsen. He was a hurricane pilot with 605 squadron who sadly went down on the 27th May 1940, flying from HAwkinge covering the Dunkirk withdrawal

I know the aircraft he lost his life in was P3581, but im trying to find out the squadron codes for this aircraft at this time as well as wether the Hurricane would have still been in black/white undersides

many thanks

steve

kspress,

I’ve recently been in contact with aviation researcher / historian Martin Goodman ( he interviewed my father who was a Leading Air Mechanic on Seafires & Hellcats ).

Martin specialises on the Hurricane, and is compiling a book with the history of every single example !!!

I would have said it was impossible before I met Martin and saw his superb work, it doesn’t take a genius to predict it will become a standard reference piece…unfortunately I made an error in taking his phone number, but expect he will call us soon; I will mention your request asap, will pm you my contact details.

HE Apr 1939 – Sep 1939
Can’t recall, either, whether I took this at Northolt in summer ’40 or Northolt/Kenley in ’41.

Tim,

They’re wearing Sky tail bands, so would have been Nov ’40 at the earliest, and the black port underside went away again around April ’41 (according to “history”). Hope this helps jog a memory!

That is a lovely picture Sir!
We have opened the museum at Boscombe Down – you would always be afforded a warm welcome.

The aircraft would still have been in black and white undersides at the time, as the Sky undersurfaces were not introduced until June 6th.

HE Apr 1939 – Sep 1939
UP Sep 1939 – Aug 1945
RAL May 1946 – Jun 1950
NR Jun 1950 – Aug 1951

There was a bit about b/w paint a while ago – can’t recall the outcome.

Can’t recall, either, whether I took this at Northolt in summer ’40 or Northolt/Kenley in ’41.
