Hello kids 😀
I was listening to a play on Radio 4 today
(Radio is like TV without the pictures)
It was built in the early days of Dad’s Army and the relationship between John Le Mesurier and Arthur Lowe (Sgt Wilson and Mainwaring)
Series 2 or 3 of Dad’s Army reached an audience of 22 million.
You’ve Got Celebrity Talented Voice With An x-Factor On Ice In The Jungle reaches about 7 or 8 million today
Have things improved, or got worse?

Tony. I am typing this in my underground bunker for the following reason.
I CAN’T STAND Dads Army:rolleyes: in my opinion, it’s not at all my taste. Yes, Prime Minister is not too bad, but the good ones are still the golden oldies.
I used to like “Love thy neibour” but they dare not show repeats of that these days. Rising damp was another one I liked, particularly Rigsby, and his cat, Victoria?.
Ronnie Barker in Porridge, some of his one liners were classics.
Yes, I know we have more choice these days, and each to his/her own taste. Then there are the classic old films, Reach for the Sky, etc and many more.
Even the larger budgets they have for making films these days, cannot match the old uns.
One day Tony, one day…….:p;)

If you like Dads Army, i would recommend watching Yes Minister or Yes Prime Minister which is running currently on Gold, it is still relevant today as it was when first aired.

Moggs. On about Segal, I think he is a U.S. Marshal or a Law enforcement officer, however the point is, I recently saw him, “On patrol, with Police in the USA,” and was surprised to see how FAT he is, he is just a blob, nothing like how he used to be when he was in the filming industry.Doubt if he could even catch a thief on crutches now !!

.. the hot women celebs Lincoln used to drool over as a lad, now put their teeth in a glass before they go to sleep. 😀
How true.
Kelly Le Brock, stunning in Weird Science and once married to Steven Segal is a case in point.

There is a program on Sky, shown on a Monday evening and it’s called “Outnumbered” a Father who is a teacher, a mother who stays at home, a small sister named Karen and an elder brother Jake, for me, the star of the show is Ben.
I could go on, but take a chance and have a look, I understand that a lot of the script is ad lib, but you would never guess. It brings tears to my eyes, it’s sooooooo funny:D

They were a group, but never mind Scott, the hot women celebs Lincoln used to drool over as a lad, now put their teeth in a glass before they go to sleep. 😀
You cheeky B****r Tony, at least they were “Up front” as mother nature intended, not like they are today filled with Silicon or Botox, Ohhhh, Marylin Monroe, Rita Hayworth, But nowadays, it was Hally Berry, but like most of the others, she went down the drugs and booze road.
Why is it that when people become famous and very, very, rich, and have everything money can buy, do they end up taking drugs etc?.
Funny old world ain’t it:rolleyes:

I’m 28 and I think that most of the TV shows on the air now are utter garbage. There are some bright spots here and there and several shows that I enjoy from time to time.
Growing up I can remember watching a variety of reruns of shows from the 50’s and 60’s and I really enjoyed several of them….namely sitcom type shows. My favorite has to be I Love Lucy. That show still makes me laugh every time I see it on.
I’m also a huge fan of Dad’s Army. It just makes me keel over with laughter every time I watch it.
I think that the conclusions many others in this thread have already reached are true. We do have a much larger number of channels than we did in the past, but overall quality is pretty low with a few exceptions.
I really wish the reality TV craze would go away as I think they are by far the worst offenders in the realm of trashy television…

I think the quality of the US imports is far better now than it was in the 1970’s
By: duxfordhawk - 10th May 2012 at 01:56
I am a not so young lad at 38, and I grew up on a diet of 70s and 80s comedies and still have a great deal of affection for them.
I do not feel that TV is better of worse now but what is more evident is how talent shows and reality TV play too bigger role in TV schedules and dumb down the public. However this is supply and demand and the likes of Simon C are great business minds for selling this stuff to the masses.
We still produce some great dramas in this country and some fine imports come from the USA and Europe from time to time that really stand out, I tend to think the quality of TV is similiar but as we now have some many channels we get wall to wall repeats and some cheaper made shows etc which dilutes the good stuff down.

Bring back that superb programme with the megga budget, seriously stunning special effects, serious acting……. Blakes 7 :D:p
Another quality production of late BTW has been the Bogias with Jeremy Irons.

I’m a ‘young lad’ and I personally find modern television utterly dull. Sure, you get some interesting programmes now and again, but it tends to not stretch any further than trashy lowest common denominator, ‘talent’ show rubbish.
However, my interests don’t lie within ‘that kind of thing’. I’d much rather build my model kits, read Len Deighton novels and consume military history books than watch any of that crud.
The problem I have with it (individually speaking) is that I get nothing out of talent shows. I strive for knowledge. That’s why I think Britain’s Got the X-factor is the television equivalent of popping bubble wrap. Haha.
Cheers
A cynical 18 year old.
Oh and Moggy. Radio 4 is brilliant. I’d much rather listen to that, than the ‘rap singers’ and ‘hop-hippers’

I think … in honesty … TV is nothing today as what it was in the past and I can understand from my dad’s perspective now why on a Saturday night he would put dad’s army on BBC 2 and I used to sit and go ” Do we have to watch this? 🙁 ”
Purely because, in comparison to programmes that we have these days – it was back in the ‘older’ days that the TV was just more entertaining, even for my ‘generation’ things in the 90s were better like Ab Fab or Keeping Up Appearances or the Vicar of Dibley …
I mean don’t get me wrong, TV these days isn’t 100% tosh – there are still some programmes in which I redeem from personal opinion to be ‘entertaining’ such as Mrs Brown’s Boys or Miranda for example …

Modern TV produces some fantastic drama and if you think modern sit-coms are all about bodily functions then perhaps you may be watching the wrong ones.
When the most exciting thing on 1970s TV was a dire episode of Dr Who or inane detective drama then you’ll realize how far we’ve come.
Anyone who saw “Homeland” on C4 recently will know how good modern TV can be.
By: Edgar Brooks - 9th May 2012 at 18:16
TV today is far superior to that of 1970s or 80s. Most of the comedy series are far better written and acted than most of those of 30 years ago.
Oh, please, if it doesn’t have incessant references to bodily functions, it isn’t funny (allegedly.) Four-letter words are a must, in drama, now, otherwise it isn’t “real.”
Look at sports telly; multi camera HD coverage of a far bigger variety of games, sports and competitions.
Plus screaming commentators, daft animations, and background music, because the producers believe that we all have the attention span of a gnat.
Yes, viewing figures are lower for pretty obvious reasons but if comparing like with like, was Opportunity Knocks really better than BGT?
Well at least we didn’t have a screaming audience, whipped into a frenzy by the organisers, drowning out the “artists” (although I have to admit that can have an advantage, at times.)

I’m 25, does that count as ‘youngster?’ 😀
Actually I find most TV inane rubbish, especially any of the talent shows, big brother and the like. I usually only dip in for documentaries, comedies, and watch drama series such as The Wire and Dexter on DVD.
I probably listen to the radio just as much, if not more, Radio 4, Radio 5 and the World Service are all I will listen to.
