I noticed that mirror on the Ju52 that visited one of the local airshows this year. Could it be to let the pilots see the engine inflight to monitor any smoke, fluid leaks or anything else abnormal?

Well it’s a possibility. It would provide an opportunity to check the prop arc is clear before starting. The other 2 engines could be checked visually.

The mirror seems to be “aimed” at the exhaust for the center engine. Could it have something to do with that?

Interesting to see in the second picture the concave mirror at the front of the engine cowl. On light twins this is provided to do a visual check of nosewheel extension but I can’t imagine what it would be for on a Ju52!

Well, the airshow will be modest, but all the passenger aircraft will be flying. Guess it must be a real sight to see a DC2, 3, 4 & 6 in the air at the same time, lett alone the smokey startups.

Yes, I work for the media, some 40 mags worldwide (not all aviation, also cars, trucks and fast ships). In Holland you can find me in Piloot & Vliegtuig , Vleugels and Aero Journaal.

Not sure yet if I am going. It’s an awfully long trip from the Achterhoek. At least 3 hours by bike, train and bus. 🙁

From what I have heard at the weather forecasters it will be raining tomorrow. Might be better to wait for the official opening of the Aviodrome, I do suppose there will be a (modest) airshow or at least a flyby.

Also, rumours are that there won’t be a lot of flying anyway because the ATC Tower can’t be manned due to a personnel shortage. Gotta love the Netherlands. 😮

BTW, how did you get your free flight? Are you from some newspaper or something?

It was a pressflight out of AMS, went to the Muiderslot and Ijselmeer and than back to AMS. Some 40 minutes FT. Are you going to Lelystad tomorrow? Must be good, JU-53, DC2 , 3, 4 & 6.

Where did you shot these, over Lelystad/Flevoland by any chance?

You must have been flying really high, you can even see the curvature of the earth on the 2nd pic! 😀

Another one ( I needed a 15 mm on my 10D to get this one). BW Roger
