A sad loss to the world of Historic Aviation enthusiasts

Just to note the passing of the legendary ‘Roadkill Platter’ (Mixed Grill) from the menu of the Red Lion at Whittlesford.

Visits to Duxford will never be the same again.

I’m sad it’s gone, but it does now mean that I really can’t have it, rather than having to resist the temptation. With 110+ miles to get home, I wouldn’t have made it before needing to sleep it off.

A new “truth in labeling” law perhaps?
It keep the old name would have required it to actually be made from road Kill.
😀

Some might say that would be an improvement going by some of the remarks on here:D

…Is it too late to mention the creaking floor boards!

Yes we love the place really, totally agree with Peter D’s sentiments.

Eh? What are you on about Steve, my sense of humour is just fine thanks! For the record, I’ve stayed there several times and although I agree it is desperate need of updating, I love it there! Rather have its character over a plastic Travel Lodge any day of the week, plus nice ice cold bottles of Becks too! Who could ask for more 🙂

As far as I can remember, its not actually sold as a “Road Kill Platter”, this appears to be a popular description for the dish by those who have taken it on… unless some wag has altered the chalk-board on which the menu is displayed… 🙂

Duh!!! where’s your scence of humour man. It’s more fun than the travel lodge. They had a german waitress on 1 occasion that i stayed, very nice girl, talked a lot. Then there’s steve the bar man, good guy to chat to. Seem to remember alcohol being alright though. Nice pub but needs updating.

[QUOTE=trumper;1354969]:confused:You stay in a hotel 20 yards from a railway station and then moan about the trains, good job you like aeroplanes or you would have Duxford shut.
If the hotel can’t get it’s food and plumbing sorted out then i suppose noise reducing double glazing is a no as well then,:).

Hi Trumper,
I’m not moaning about it just making my observations of my past visit’s to the Red Lion. ..Why on earth would I want Duxford shut????

Main reason I stay there is because it is handy, whilst working at Duxford. I think also it is more ‘cost effective’, according to the cheap-skates in the accounts dept of the company that I work for!

I trust that the Spanish Omlette is still on the menu? This similar to the mixed grill, presented on a massive platter, again tried but could not eat it all!!

Hi all, If you had seen the bedrooms you wouldnt want to stay there either. Stayed a couple of times when working at HFL. Pulled plug from sink and everything in sink ended up in the bath !!! very pleasent !!!!

Steve

Better than pulling the plug from the bath and everything ending up in the sink…..seems to be a lot of slanderous (or is it libelous?) stuff floating about this thread… :diablo:… but thanks for the heads-up guys.

I think the thing is that it is a ‘period’ pub/hotel that hasn’t really kept pace with today’s rising standards.

If you want the experience stay at the Red Lion and shrug when the plumbing is cranky. If you are happy with a Travelodge then go down the road as suggested.

I have eaten there often. The food is fine and I have never once suffered any form of stomach upset. And the Adnams is well kept, if served a little cold for my tastes.

Oh gawd what awful news!

Stayed there on several occasions had the mixed grill…could not eat it all..a lesson learned!
As mentioned by Mackerel the plumbing was something else…had my car broken into…woken up by the 0300 express train to No-wheresville-on-Sea.

However a great place with lots of character..hope it does not change too much!

http://www.trlh.co.uk/ “Today the present owners have done much to preserve and restore the original history and character of this listed building whilst providing modern facilities for all guests. We look forward to welcoming you.” does’nt sound like many agree with that statement.I supose people will vote with their feet and stay somewhere else BUT it is handy if you don’t know the area or have transport.

Awful food in a grotty pub with some wonderful history behind it. If you have ever seen in the kitchens you wouldnt eat there again.
