Thanks, DazDaMan. I wonder if the Spit was over Perthshire this afternoon – I saw, but only at a considerable distance, an aircraft which I thought looked and sounded like one.

Any idea why the shark-mouth one was going to Cumbernauld?

Apparently the Boultbee Spitfire Tr.9 is currently at Cumbernauld, so perhaps the Mustang is, too?

Indeed DazDaMan. I’m glad you share my dislike at the way some museums display there aircraft.
I suppose at least the Bulldog is in a normal flying arrangement.

Yes I did, Dave. That was the first time I had been at Perth in quite a few years too. One tends to forget our own doorstep at times lol.

I totally agree – I was looking forward to seeing the Puss Moth with wings out too. The pity is that there is still a lot of empty space in the Concorde hangar. I believe the Tiger Moth is displayed in a flying pose in Edinburgh but not so dramatically as the Kay Gyroplane – that is totally ridiculous!

I went to East Fortune two years ago, the new display hanger was under renovation then and all the exhibits were in a temporary plastic hanger, and you could only peer in. The only aircraft in there that was photographable was the Tiger Moth. I believe this is on display in Edinburgh’s science museum, no doubt displayed in a stupid arrangement like the Kay Gyroplane. I hate these arty farty types displaying aircraft like this. See photo to see what I mean.

Overall though a great museum, will have to get up there again.

Final trip to date took us down to Ayr for the Scottish Air Show. We were only able to catch the first half of the Saturday display. Fortunately, the Dragonfly and Chipmunk turned up earlier than we expected. The Catalina did a lovely display with the island of Arran forming a beautiful backdrop.

In between the fly-ins we managed a visit to East Fortune. First visit since the revamp. I was impressed with the new layout in the Civil Hangar. It is well-lit with plenty of room to roam around the aircraft and get really close to them. The interactive displays are excellent showing such things as cockpit shots, restoration photos and interviews with pilots. The military hangar I didn’t enjoy so much feeling, in my opinion, that it was a bit cluttered with screens and the dias in the middle made it all a bit cramped. The Conservation Hangar was closed to the public so no chance to see the Beaufighter. I think the Provost and Viscount must be in there too.

Yes certainly, Cessna 310 is a lovely classic aeroplane originally dating from the 1950s.
The Luton Minor looks in lovely condition at Perth.

The following weekend saw a drive north take a quick diversion into Connel where the Oban Air Fair was taking place. I put a couple of pics of the Catalina on a separate thread earlier. It was a real treat to be able to get on board this beautiful aircraft –

There were quite a few visiting/resident aircraft, mostly modern types. Maybe just scraping into the historic category were a Hebridean Air Services Islander and Wittman Tailwind.

The following day we drove up to Montrose having received a tip-off from Wallace that a Fly In was taking place there. A temporary airstrip was marked out on the site of the original Broomfield Aerodrome. Mostly modern types again but amongst them were a few gems –
