A shopper's Nightmare…..

“Borough to benefit from roads revamp Jul 21 2005

Five-million pound is to be ploughed into an ambitious scheme for major improvements to the borough’s roads and streets.

Work starts on Sunday on re-construction of the A34 Green Lane, between Blue Lane West and Stephenson Avenue, as part of an extra programme of highway maintenance using new Prudential borrowing powers.

Measures

To enable the work to be undertaken safely, contractors Birse CL, operating on the council’s behalf, will put in place several measures.

From Sunday, July 24, for one month, a one-way system will operate into town in the southbound direction between Hospital Street and Blue Lane West, with an alternative route signposted for northbound traffic.

From Sunday, August 21, the one-way system will be extended to operate between Stephenson Avenue and Blue Lane West and this will operate for a further three months.

During this phase, contractors will also need to close the road temporarily overnight when re-surfacing work is being undertaken. This means on some days it may appear no work is happening during the day as all operations will be at night.

Traffic and transportation manager Glyn Oliver said: “We apologise in advance for any inconvenience this work may cause but our aim is to make it easier for people to get around and improve the appearance of the borough.

“We will keep motorists informed of the scheme’s progress as it develops. This re-construction work marks the council’s commitment to building on our existing success in improving Walsall’s road network.

“we are working hard to make it easier for people to get around as part of our vision to create a better borough. Our partnership with Birse Civils Ltd will continue to improve our roads.”

This will effectively prevent me from reaching three of my supermarkets of choice and two petrol stations unless I make a considerable detour. Is road maintenance and transport planning in the UK effectively carried out or does the motorist pay far too much in road fund license for the service received?

Never mind the road tax, what are the petrol prices like your way Kev? At my local BP garage it’s currently 91.9p per litre for ordinary unleaded 😮

Kev35,

if our road fund license actually went on improving the roads they would be in a much better condition than they are.

As for the closures and diversion it is standard practice to try and keep the ‘works’ and the public apart for health & safety reasons. If a contractor can work on the whole road width it will, in the long run, be quicker (and often cheaper) than only working on one side at a time with traffic lights controlling the traffic. What would you rather have – 1 month of a closure with a signed / advertised diversion route or 2 or 3 months of traffic lights / queues etc.
