A Slightly Different Take On Waddington 2009!

Hi all,

Yesterday myself and fellow member EGNM had a wander down to Waddington. It has to be said, the flying display was somewhat disappointing after the last few years; there just wasn’t that much going on. The ground displays were excellent though, and the unexpected superb weather made for a good day.

It’s usually my intention at air shows to shoot in a ‘jetphotos friendly’ and technically correct way, but bright skies (meaning lots of backlit aircraft) and obstructions meant doing so was quite awkward for the vast majority of the ground stuff, hence most of these being shot in a more ‘non-aviation’ style. Apologies to those who aren’t fans of borders, I was feeling a little lazy when I edited these this morning (partly due to post-airshow beers) and the border is recorded as an action that I use for my Flickr uploads. It was the easiest way of watermarking them. I think it works due to the non-technical way most of these are shot, though. All opinions, as always are more than welcome.

The vast majority shot using a Canon 30D and Sigma 10-20, with the odd one being the 30D + EF 70-200L f/4 or Sigma 50-500DG.

Hi

Yes, it is the whole VC10 shot I am referring to. I could see on the day that he barriers and obstructions were a pain. One or two of my friends found taking pictures of some static aircraft rather awkward. The shot may have been at a better angle without the barrier in the way.

Cheers

Martin

Yeah but that was precisely the problem. Had the barriers not been there then I’d have used a longer focal length and taken a more conventional shot that I could have uploaded to JP, just so I had a VC-10 on there. I don’t really see why they can’t put the barriers up in a slightly different way so the views are less obstructed. It would be perfectly possible to do. Ahh well… We do what we can with what we’re given I guess! 🙂

although I am not too sure about the VC10 shot – that one is a bit too abstract for me.

I have to admit, that one took the most time of any of them to shoot and it’s the one I thought would be criticised out of this bunch. I was pacing up and down for a good couple of minutes (most of my images, aviation and non-aviation are framed and taken within a second or two) trying to find a way to get the entire aircraft in the frame without offputting obstructions like barriers, etc, but I also wanted to try exaggerate the tremendous size of the tail using the 10-20. I actually wanted the tail bigger in the frame but those damned barriers were in the way! It was the first time I’d ever actually seen a VC-10 so I kept at it until I found a way of getting the whole thing in the frame, although I can certainly appreciate the composition isn’t to everyones tastes. As I say, the non-aviation/non-JP side of my photography was the more prominent yesterday and as such a lot of ‘non-standard’ images came out.

Thankyou for your comment and your opinion. Much appreciated. 🙂

Paul

EDIT:- Actually, I’m assuming you’re talking about the one with the entire aircraft or do you mean the tail shot?!

A great set of arty photos. They all look excellent although I am not too sure about the VC10 shot – that one is a bit too abstract for me.

but I sure the horizon wasn’t level in a couple of them :D:D:D:D

You’ll find several very un-technically correct histograms as well! 😀

Thanks for your comments so far, all. Much appreciated. 🙂

A lovely set Paul! I really enjoy viewing aviation shot in a ‘different’ style:) Although I have to say, the Typhoon looks to me like a raptor type dinosaur with neck frills, you know, the ones that squirt a black liquid and kill the fat guy in Jurassic Park!

Cheers, Huw:)

I really like those dramatic (wide-angle) shots. ´Black arrows´ of the PdF are great too.
