On Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th December, 2011 Aviation Heritage Lincolnshire will be hosting events in Lincoln to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the mid-air collision, in which P/O John Gillespie Magee lost his life.
This includes a talk on the Saturday and participation in the Matins service at Lincoln Cathedral on the Sunday, where readings from his aviation poem ‘High Flight’ will be read. Proceeds from the talk will go to the RAF Benevolent Fund.
A few details can be found on the AHL website at http://www.aviationheritagelincolnshire.com
Whilst more comprehensive details about the weekend’s events and how to participate, can be found via this weblink!

This was in part covered on a new thread, but also with more details in here!
Hugh Magee now lives in Scotland and he was interviewed by the BBC TV & Radio before and during the event; hopefully some of the magazines will also be featuring the story in the coming weeks.

Howard
Any feed-back, photos or information from the day?
As I recall, I was in contact with Rev Magee back in about 1980-ish. I think he was then in the US somewhere or other. I really must dig out my file!

I’m hoping to be able to have a chat with the Rev. Hugh Magee tomorrow or Sunday!

I had contact with Griffin’s family.
I have found my files on Magee and have much more material (including photos and documents) than I remembered.
If I had had the time I could have produced a wealth of material for the event, but will try to post some material here this evening.

Ernest Aubrey Griffin
Let us not forget:- 1314735 LAC (U/T P) Ernest Aubrey Griffin. Aged 19, he was flying the Airspeed Oxford trainer (T1052) from RAF College Cranwell SFTS that was in collision with Magee’s Spitfire. I am led to believe that Ernest had almost completed his training. He was cremated at the Oxford Crematorium, Oxford. CWGC website refers.

Not sure without a bit of delving, although someone like Mk12 will probably know right away.
I have just dug out my bulging file on Magee. I had forgotten quite how much stuff I had amassed in the early 1980s. (My article was in After The Battle number 63 if anyone wants to get a copy with the background story behind his unfortunate loss)

Twin Otter,
PM sent extremely grateful for the offer.

I’m attending both events and I’ll see what material is available; as a minimum I’ll try and ‘liberate’ an order of service for you from the Cathedral.
If you PM me a postal address I’ll send it through to you – I hope that the op goes OK! 🙂
I cannot answer your aircraft question directly; however I will look into it. I believe that AHL has access to some photographs of Magee at Wellingore, including one with him sat in a Spitfire, plus one of the Squadron meeting the King also at Wellingore.

A very apt and fitting tribute!

Although “our” Harvard is a Mk. IV, VWoC has marked and dedicated the aircraft to J.G. Magee’s memory.

Yesterday I was advised by one of the organisers of the AHL Magee events that there have been fairly high levels of interest in the talk on Saturday 10th December – so pre-booking might be a good idea if you plan to attend!

………..I did a great deal of research many years ago on J G Magee and have a considerable quantity of material here. Not sure if you saw it, but I also did a large piece on him and his demise in After The Battle some years ago. Happy to scan and send if it will help?…
Thanks for the feedback Andy, which I will make the AHL team aware of – I don’t personally recall seeing the piece that you mention but they may be aware of it. I know that they have made many contacts whilst preparing for the events in December, which I understand are starting to attract a lot of national and international interest.
I looks set to be a good weekend in Lincolnshire!
