Today I was at work doing regular line service (fueling planes etc etc) when at 3pm I got a call on the radio from my boss – Did you bring flying clothes today? Yes I said … Good, we go as soon as the aircraft’s aux tanks have been topped off .. get changed!
I turns out we had a call to get an organ transplant team from La Porte Indiana to Indianapolis (a fairly short flight). It took us an hour to get to La Porte for the pickup. We had to waste some time on the ground getting an IFR clearance out of there (because President Bush was at South Bend Indianna and there was a TFR in place). But we were soon on our way. It was sobering loading up the Coolers. I didn’t ask exactly what they contained, but I could guess. ATC certainly gave us a great service (amazing what the ‘lifeguard’ callsign does for you. After dropping the medical team and their precious cargo at Indianapolis I flew us back to Zanesville, Ohio (the captain took the right seat and acted as my co-pilot 🙂 in the murky weather (It was pretty solid IFR for almost the whole flight home).. A very good trip because it was unexpected, and although it meant there was a tragedy for one family, we played a small part in helping another. This was the first flight that I have made that has had a real purpose (if you know what I mean). It felt good.
edit: I posted this without really thinking if it was OT in the GA forum or not. Sorry if it is OT.

Sounds good – I would love to get a chance to use flying to help others. Whilst sobering, I can fully understand that it would have been very satisfying.

Perhaps the MOST satisfying sort of flight? Nice one Paul.
