The excellent ‘Heroes All’ by Dr Steve Bond With its first hand counts of flying related experiences in WWII, prompted me to ‘Google Maps’ Cardington. I was looking for evidence of the 40 man Nissan Huts of the recruiting centre, the destination for many a recruit. Not surprisingly they seem to be long gone, but my eyes were drawn to the nearby village of Shortstown…stuffed full of aviation related road names, both aircraft and, I suspect, people.
‘Can you direct me to Hunter Close?’
‘Right into Victor Close, then right into Shorts Avenue, and it’s at the end.’
A time capsule laid in tarmac – there are maybe plenty of other such named roads in clusters at ex-service bases. Especially nice to see the Brabazon Close.

Live just down the road from Shortstown, there has been a lot of building going on there converting the old buildings into flats and houses and building a load more, it’s been done very sympathetically too, with the new designs reflecting those of the previous RAF ones.
The next town along is Shefford and this has a section with Churchill Way, Roosevelt Ave, Montgomery Avenue, Spitfire Rd, Overlord Cl, ancaster PL, Alamein Cl, Eisenhower Rd and Arnhem Pl.

The access road to the Heathfield Retail Park in Ayr is called Liberator Drive. The park is located on the site of the former RAF Heathfield.

That would be Sterling Rd in Cambourne; and no it hasn’t changed.
My wife’s best friend lives in Lancaster Rd in Cardington 🙂

Road names can be interesting. I once came across a new housing estate in the Midlands where the Builder had given aviation related names to the roads. One stuck out like a sore thumb. It was Sterling Road. I have often wondered if it was changed.

That was the site of the old Residential Training and Conference Centre, which ran training courses for the Property Services Agency and probably other government departments. I did a couple of courses there in the late 1980s but never did get the promised tour of the RAF Museum store or the airship hangars! The accommodation blocks were brick built as I recall. RTCC closed around the time we were privatised in 1992, buildings still there in 1994 when I flew over as a pax in a PA-28 on the way to the PFA at Cranfield.

Friends used to own a house in ShortsTown, they were part of the quarters if I remember correctly.
