Paul… it came back due to a suspected fire in the forward cargo hold. It closed the airport to all traffic for around 40 mins. They later opened the other runway to smaller aircraft – nothing bigger than a 737 could use. A TCX A321 was stuck on the ground for over 2 hours because of the runway closure.
It was later reported that there was no fire, just a faulty light in the cockpit – the flight departed later in the day around half 6 – over 4 hours late.
Ah, I see. It has to be said, I’m not easily scared and never get nervous flying (or haven’t yet at least), but that’s a scenario that genuinely would scare me. Incidentally, I’ve flown on D-AIAH as well!
I forgot to mention earlier, that beautiful old DC-3 is looking somewhat worse for wear. What an undignified state for her to be in!

Absolutely brilliant selection of snaps. The night-time shots are particularly good.
Looks like the traffic was a little more exciting than our visit back in April… Air Malta, Air Malta, Lufthansa A319, Air Malta, Air Malta, Lufthansa A319! 😀

28th Oct and back at the airport. Today a Lufthansa A300 took off and 20 minutes later radioed up and declared an emergency due to a suspected fire in the cargo hold – 20 mins later it was back on the ground. Fair to say it attracted a lot of attenetion, even from local media – some of which approached me for use of photos!

Off she goes…
