A Worrying Development?

“Routine TB vaccination to end

Routine TB vaccination at age 13 is to end in England, Scotland and Wales.

Instead, the government will target high rsik groups such as infants born in areas where TB incidence is greater than 40 cases per 100,00.

Babies will also be immunised whose parents or grandparents lived in a country with a similar TB prevalence, as will previously unvaccinated immigrants from countries that have a high prevalence of TB.

Professor Sir Liam Donaldson, chief medical officer for England, said the UK was the only country routinely vaccinating 13-year-olds in Europe and the change brought the country ‘up to the World Health Organisation gold standard’.”

Is this potentially a worrying trend, especially in areas where TB is still prevalent among certain sectors of the population?
