A318 engines

What happened to the different engine choices for the A318, they were offering CFM and P&W, early pics show the test aircraft with pratts on, and all deliverys have been made with CFM. I knew they were issues with the pratts but is this still an option or has it been scrapped for good?.

The popularity for operations (popularity being what makes best sense money wise) goes in circles with new developments. IAEs on A320 family were always best before as they used less fuel than the CFMs but now the CFMs have become ALOT more economical than the IAEs so most operators with the A320 family are choosing to go CFM off the production line unless they have alreasy got an IAE only fleet of A320 family aircraft and want to keep commonality as that is cheaper than mixed.

Doesnt fronteir use P&W engines im not i think im wrong though lol:P

Frontier originally ordered it’s A318’s with Pratt & Whitney PW6000 engines, although this was changed to CFM International’s CFM56-5B powerplant in March 2002 after Pratt & Whitney encountered fuel consumption problems with it’s engine which is now delayed to 2006

The P&W engine is joint venture between them and MTU of Germany,The P&W was the lead engine, but the fuel burn was higher than promised,so the engine went back to the drawing board (i think they replaced a compressor) so they could get the fuel burn they promised the airlines…Frontier had ordered P&W A318’s but couldnt wait for the engine,so went for the CFM instead..i also heard the Frontier CEO say, that the CFM unit on the A318 wasnt exactly the best engine on this aircraft because of the engines weight, but overall he was very happy with the A318 itself,as it had a 98% despatch reliability and despite the CFM’s short comings, the plane has met or exceeded performance and range promises made by Airbus…he also hinted that Airbus should lower the unit price and they would sell more of them

I don’t think V2500’s are due to appear on the A318. The P&W has had some problems although I believe they are now getting close to certification.

I guess that only CFM’s are certified yet. That’s why the A318 program had some delays
