Just back from Duxford and seeing Dark Blue World in the old Astra Cinema (boy, those seats are tough!!) and during a wander round the hangars came across the A-36 looking a bit forlorn. Thought I’d post a few pics I took of her being prepped for her journey home.
I wonder if we’ll see her back again?

RE: A36 – Clipped Tail Feathers!
Maybe they’re drool trays – to catch all that dribble of folk looking at it?? 🙂

RE: A36 – Clipped Tail Feathers!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-10-02 AT 02:33Â PM (GMT)]I guess that depends on where the oil leaks out from. If there’s any kind of oil leak from the engine, it’ll seep out and keep going downhill until it finds a way out of the airframe. If the fuselage is so tightly finished that there isn’t an outlet until you get to the tailwheel bay, it makes sense to lay the trays out all the way under the aircraft. Same would go for any kind of fluid that they don’t want to spill on the hangar floor, therefore with the radiator placed so far back on the fuselage, that’s another reason for covering the floor so far. Must admit I haven’t noticed it on any P51’s though…

I thought the line of drip trays was odd. Is this unique to the A36?

The A36 is genuine, bought in the 50’s and stored for 25 years before rebuild started, serial 42-83731 N251A

RE: A36 – Clipped Tail Feathers!
Whats the history of that A36? Is it genuine or a reconfigured P51D?

I believe she is going to California to be restored to stock condition. Because Tom Freikin saw Princess Elizabeth being restored to stock he wanted the same for the A-36.
There are quite a lot of differences between this A/C and the P-51D the A-36 is about 6 inches shorter in height for starters

Bob
Great photos, particularly the close up of the nose – and it just goes to show, you learn something new every day. I had no idea the early P-51 and A-36 had guns mounted below the engine.
I’d love to see a similar photo taken of a Merlin engined P-51 to get some idea of the engineering changes that were required to fit it to the original airframe. Does anybody have any such pics, or can someone enlighten me as to exactly what changes were required to replace the Alison with a Merlin?
Also, another what if? Was the P-51 ever fitted with a Griffon as an experiment or as a prototype for an upgraded model? Were there any contra-prop models during the Mustang’s original life (ie, not later Cavalier versions etc)?
