Nice photo’s, and wow!! look at the size of them engines.

I like the fan blades on the GE/PW engine.

Now does someone know why the center landing gear is not extended?
I believe that was addressed already. With the absence of payload, the decreased weight doesn’t require the use of the centre landing gear. Furthermore, They probably don’t even use the no. 1 engine with that huge thing being more than adequate for left side thrust.

On the picture link I gave above, the engine is off.
But if you decrease the thrust of number one, and keep engine nr 2’s N1% equal to nr 3 and 4, you should have a symmetrical thrust. But of course, the engine has to be tested for every flight operation. The only solution I can think of to solve that, is high rudder inputs, or a low thrust setting for engine nr 1.

I never got an answer to this on the other A380 engine thread but how do they cope with the obvious thrust difference on one side of the aircraft when testing these engines? Do they just run them at a lower speed than the smaller, less powerful ones to create the same amount of thrust?

Where is the center landing gear of the A340????!!!!
On this and all A340 pictures above, it’s missing! http://www.airliners.net/open.file/580158/M/

the A380 WILL be an AMAZING Aircraft!

The 747 engines look tiny aswell but then you think that a person can stand up inside a 747 engine which mean the A380’s must be MASSIVE!
By: by738 - 9th May 2004 at 21:57
It just shows you how small the engines on the A340-300 are- they look tiny in comparison – almost like the old 737-200 engines !!

Nice ! Post some photos if you can please.

I could ask my uncle to clear up any confusion. He is somewhat an expert as he works for Airbus UK at Filton, nr Bristol and helps to design the wing structure and weights I think or soething like that.
He often goes to Toulose from Filton (on a privatair A320) for meetings etc and takes photos for me. Yesterday he gave me some photos of the A380 wings and engines he took recently.

About 124 inches for the GE90.
I don’t think it’s that big. The GE90 was the biggest (diameter wise) of the 3 777 engines, but it was only marginally bigger. If the Trent and the PW have diameters of 110 inches, then the GE90’s is like 112, or something. It’s not 14 inches longer than the other 2.
Jeanske, the 720 testbed you mention is owned by Pratt & Whitney Canada, which makes prop engines. For the 777 engine program, P&W actually brought the original 747 (line #1) out of retirement, leasing it from Boeing in order to use as a testbed for the PW4070.

Quite big….;)
Thanks for posting 🙂

Don’t Rolls Royce have an own test aircraft?
PW have a 720, but that wing is probably too low and too weak to carry and stand the thrust of such a powerful engine.

The RR fan diameter is 116 inches, and the GE/PW engine is 116.7 inches in diameter. The Trent 800 has a fan diameter of 110 inches. I can’t find the fan diameters for the GE-90 at the moment… but it’s probably going to be similar to the trent 800!

These pics are incredible, thank you for posting them. And, yes, it is the Rolls Royce Trent 900.
Thanks again-

How do these compare to the 777 engines in fan diameter and thrust? I’m sure we’re talking about similar engines, but the newer A380 engines being slightly more fuel efficient, perhaps? Also, the ‘American’ engines are not just GE, they are Engine Alliance Pratt/GE together, right? Very low ground clearance for those beasts on their testbeds!
