Ive got a bet with certain British gentlemen that the A380 will never leave the design board except for a few mockups. Can anyone tell me if Airbus is actually got anything built yet for the actual aircraft?

RE: A380 status
So i have heard….someone told me a about a recent study on the A380, that if the present design flys with max payload….during landing the extra wing weight, which is not blending with the fuselauge weight will result in gear collapse during impact on the runway. Well this is just one part what i have heard.

RE: A380 status
Parts are being built.
Rumor has that at this stage of the design the plane is overweight. Design must go on a diet.
5000 PSI hydraulics will be used versus the standard 3000 PSI to reduce weight of actuation systems. Hydraulic power units will be less centralized to reduce heavy hydraulic tubing runs.
My boss who has his sources says wing to body join remains a design problem. More composites may have to be introduced to complete the A380 diet.

I can’t believe Emirates selected the GE/PW engine instead of the Trent. I hope this plane flies, it will be awesome.

RE: A380 status
Yep, but Airbus will have some great designers, and aeronautical engineers who will find out what the aircraft can and can’t do before they start to build it. Airbus wouldn’t spend so much money developing the idea if it couldn’t get off the ground in 10000feet.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-05-02 AT 11:32 PM (GMT)]Im VERY surprised to hear that theyre building actual parts for a flying aircraft. But remember, if it cant get off a 10,000 ft runway with a full compliment of passengers and fuel, its still just a powered mockup.

RE: A380 status
In A320 wing production, the stringers start off being made from extruded aluminium on the East coast of the USA. They are then machined to be stingers on the West coast of the USA… and then assembled into wings in the UK. Is this the same for the A380 wings??

RE: A380 status
They have even decided how to transport wings to Toulouse, It´s going to be by river so I guess you´ve lost the bet

RE: A380 status
Their new plant at Hawarden Airport (EGNR) UK which will make the ne wings for A380 is strongly underway and is near completion!
Sorry man but u will owe that guy!

RE: A380 status
You have lost that bet! The orders placed for the A380 so far have pretty much guaranteed its first production run.

RE: A380 status
They just produced a few fuse/wing panels for it I think – check out their newsletter at airbus.com

Of course…the A380 will fly! Sorry you’ll loose the bet 😉
