AAM Duxford

For those of you who like to shout at the television, there is a programme on Channel 4 tonight (11/10) at 7.55 called the “Three Minute Wonder” and it’s on your favourite building, the American Air Museum.

My apologies for not mentioning the length of the programme. Very briefly it was part of a series reviewing how past winners of an architectural prize are getting on in “real life” i.e. not on the drawing board. Only time for 2 visitors to comment, one approved and the other thought it was a bit dark. The IWM rep said she felt people missed the best view by not going up the ramp to be faced with the B52. I like the building but the use of white “Hypalon (?)” on the roof might not have been a good idea. It’s discoloured already and is not easy to clean. Still that’s architects for you.

If its about architecture it’ll be all about the triumph over function that the AAM is.
The AAM is aweful, cramped, atrocious lighting (if its sunny outside – on those rare occasions when it’s not raining – its difficult if not impossible to see anything inside properly), and it has aircarft suspended on wires. Oh and lets not forget, its full of un-interesting American rubbish.

Perhaps the name of the place might have tipped to off that it wasn’t likely to be your cup of tea?

If you can stand, one day, to cross the threshold, it’s worth considering just how many of those American designs were relied upon by RAF and Commonwealth flyers over the years, as well of course as the US service personnel whose contribution the building is there to commemorate.

You never mentioned it was a FIVE MINUTE programme! I dashed downstairs at 0801 when my permission came to turn over after the Eastenders signature tune had died away, only to find it finished! 🙁

Is that just about the architecture of the building, or the contents? Have a feeling it’s about the former, might give it a look though
