Duxford’s F105D looks as if it might be moving eastwards.

The 105 at Lakenheath was scrapped years ago.
After it was offered to Duxford and turned down!! 😡

[QUOTE=CADman;1544222]the gate keepers simply do not understand what is meant by ‘can I photograph the airplanes, please’ I have been told that a phone call to base public affairs can gain permission, but never tried it.

Are the gate keepers American or British? Perhaps you should have asked about the aeroplanes.

It is just inside the main gate opposite a F100, but i would not turn up with a camera as the base at Croughton does some supposedly hush hush stuff!!
What is another matter, i do know that so people from MAM repainted her a few years back so she could be in good knick.

Croughton’s is easily seen from the main road, but approaching the gate usually causes all sorts of hassle, the gate keepers simply do not understand what is meant by ‘can I photograph the airplanes, please’ I have been told that a phone call to base public affairs can gain permission, but never tried it.
Shame that the Lakenheath one was scrapped, though they did keep an f-4, F-15 and F-111.

Is the one at Croughton easily viewable and whats access like to take photos??
By: Arabella-Cox - 6th March 2010 at 19:03
Shame to see her go but i have wondered what number she was in the list of airframes awaiting restoration and with the AAM filling up nicely where would she go except hanging from the ceiling maybe?
But hopefully this is the only exodus from Duxford although maybe the F105D from Croughton would have been an easier proposition and could come in from the cold.

Absolutely gutted!
That is probably the one aircraft I really want to see at Dux , even though Thuds didn’t really have a great deal to do with the UK operationally.
I can’t read the whole thing at the moment, but why is it leaving the UK and what is the deal, it looks like the IWM AAM are being asked to stand aside?

Bye bye THUD 😡

My first response was anger that the IWM were ‘giving away’ another exhibit. But after reading the attached story I am happy that the 105 is going to a good home with a certain local interest.
What happened to the F-105 that was BDR are Lakenheath ?

The reasoning behind it is pretty thin! I cannot think of any connections that Poland has with the type and to take it away from a country where the type was operated to one where it wasn’t seems bizarre.

Yes, we should have a THUD preserved in this country – perhaps someone can get the one at Croughton under cover.

Thats a real shame and loss to the IWM in my view, I was looking forward to seeing her restored.
Then again, she will be in a museum, on display somewhere and not lost, but it’s a lovely looking beast of an aircraft and the IWM’s loss is somebody elses gain! 🙁

Thanks for the heads up. I have mixed views on this one though as while it is great that she is going to be restored and displayed in her former glory, its a sad loss to Duxford as i for one was hoping to see her ‘eventually’ displayed there.
Was’nt there a thread on here fairly recently about this bird?
