Been out of the loop for a few months poorly/hospital etc, not sure if this has been shown on here…….

Is the one on the beach a Catalina?

Do you have any more?

Now…any ideas on the private light twin (Beechcraft?) in picture seven?

Well, I’m not an expert on these things but I’d say it was a Cessna 310 and I’d like to say C310Q because of the short nose and window at the rear of the cabin. My 2p 🙂

It’s not that HU16 from 2003. And there’s more, including one in 2005, also waaaaaaaaay off location-wise.

The flying boat at the beach is definitely a HU16. It is at Playa Ventanilla in Mexico. A Google search throws up some more pics and story. Apparently a drug traffickers, it was brought down by the Mexican military around 10 years ago. All survived, the plane was full of marijuana.

The only HU-16 that has crashed in or anywhere near Mexico (that I know of) is N7026Y on April 14 2003. Crash details at http://aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=20030414-0 and the official NTSB report at http://dms.ntsb.gov/aviation/AccidentReports/ates1y3a342ej5qeukobvh551/T05032013120000.pdf. To quote from the latter

On April 14, 2003, at 1830 central daylight time, a Grumman HU-16 amphibian airplane, N7026Y, was destroyed following a loss of control during the turn from base to final approach near Chetumal, State of Quintana Roo, in the Republic of Mexico. The instrument rated private pilot and his 2 passengers were fatally injured. The 1954 vintage airplane, serial number 137921, was owned and operated by the pilot. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the personal flight for which a visual flight rules (VFR) flight plan was filed. The flight originated from Tulum at 1730 with Chetumal (CTM) as its intended destination.

Local authorities reported the airplane had been cleared to land on runway 10 at the Chetumal International Airport. Witnesses reported that the airplane rolled and nosed over during the turn from left base to final approach. The airplane came to rest about 4 miles from the threshold of runway 10. A post-impact fire consumed the airframe”

There’s some Tube of You video footage which gives a good 360 degree “walkaround” of the wreck at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MalA1C22Qt4

Pic. 5 appears to be a HU-16. It has the fixed pylon for the float some way in from the tip, unlike the Catalina, which has wing tip retractable floats.

Also, the Cat wing mounts on a pylon. Pic. 5 shows a much bigger attachment direct to the top of the fuselage.

Amazing and atmospheric pics of interesting aircraft.

Note the remains of a fuselage attached to the center section of the wing… the Catalina had the wing mounted on a narrow pylon above the fuselage, and the engines were much closer together*.

I agree with the C-82 ID… the C-123 had a different nose shape with much larger forward windscreens.

* as in this pic of a Catalina on a beach in Saudi Arabia.

And, inspired by the car in Australia, here is a jeep I photographed in May 2010 from the AMTRAK (passenger train) in the Colorado River flood channel between Palisade, Colo. and Rifle, Colo.

Third picture – captioned “Canada” is very obviously a Bristol Freighter. I presume this it is this one: http://aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=19740531-0 That is CF-QWJ which crashed on May 31 1974

Almost, but not quite. It is http://aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=19560530-1 at Beaver Lodge Lake.

Number 7 is I would say a C-82, likely this one: http://www.ruudleeuw.com/crash-c82-n208m-tom_hird.htm

Great pictures and thanks for the stories! If you continue with the link after the overgrown bob-sleigh run you see the overgrown entrance to the aircraft storage cave built into the Croatian hillside.

Abandoned Airframes

A great set of photos, lots of stories to be told.

OK, so let’s start telling ’em!

First picture – captioned “West Sahara” is the easy one: its SAAF Shackleton 1716 which is still where it crashed on 13 July 1994 (see http://www.flyafrica.info/forums/showthread.php?12783-SAAF-Shackleton-Accident-(1716)-13-July-1994-Sahara-Desert for the background story)

Second picture – captioned “Canada” is Douglas C-47 45-1037 (or “51037” as it appears on the fin) which crashed at Haines Junction in the Yukon on Feb 7, 1950 during a search for a C-54 that went missing Jan 26, 1950. All 10 on board survived and were rescued. (background story here: http://www.ruudleeuw.com/dc3_mystery.htm

Third picture – captioned “Canada” is very obviously a Bristol Freighter. I presume this it is this one: http://aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=19740531-0 That is CF-QWJ which crashed on May 31 1974

Fourth picture – very obviously a Curtiss C-46 Commando (which which one – and when did it crash?)

Fifth picture – captioned “Mexico” is, I’d agree, probably a Catalina

Comments in the sixth and seventh pictures would be welcome.

Eighth picture – is a nother shot of the smae Bristol Freighter referred to above, albeit taken from a different angle

You could be right, if it had drifted off to Mexico (where the picture was taken according to the caption) and the wreck had turned itself into a Grumman HU16 (which is what I think it is).

So obviously not this one in Saudi Arabia! 😮

Fourth picture – very obviously a Curtiss C-46 Commando (but which one – and where and when did it crash?)

Fifth picture – captioned “Mexico” is, I’d agree, probably a Catalina; the layout of the engines makes the wreckage look like one (high wing, 2 x radial engines close together)

Comments in the sixth and seventh pictures would be welcome. It’s hard to see what the aircraft is in the seventh picture, captioned “USA” due to the density of the trees! (Perhaps a Fairchild C-123?)

Eighth picture – is another shot of the same Bristol Freighter referred to above, albeit taken from a different angle
