Aberdeen Spotting/Photography

Hoping someone can help me a little here….

Just found a good £58 return flight on Bmi to ABZ on Sunday 18th February. I found similar deals to DUB and EDI, but fancied this one in particular because it’s an ERJ out and an A319 return, a bit more interesting than A320 both ways (plus I loved my previous trip on the ERJ, and ABZ is a relatively long flight in comparison!). However, I wanted to know a bit about photography in ABZ, and movements to expect?

I’d be arriving around 1040 and departing at 1745 or 2020. Is it easy to get around, will there be much traffic, and would anyone be willing to turn it into a small meet?

If ABZ doesn’t look like the best option, then I’m considering a DUB daytrip/meet on the same day instead…let me know what y’all think.

Cheers for the help guys…

I mentioned it in this thread here http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=66393 but incase any haven’t seen I was wondering if there are any people out there who might fancy a bit of a meet in ABZ on Subday Feb 18th? Flights are a little difficult, but BACON from MAN on Dash-8’s is £67, and Bmi ERJ/A319 to/from LHR is £58.

Thanks very much for the advice Scotty. Does anyone have anything else to add, or any photos as examples of different vantage points?

Hi wannabe,
There are a few areas were you can take photos check out Robbert Pittuck posting on the Images section , If you come out of the terminal turn Left , go past the DHL shed and you will find either a path if not you will stumbble on to a farm road that leads down the side of the Fence , turn left and you will see the bus shelter good views of the main ramp area
Turning Right from the terminal follow the road up the hill and you will see an embankment , which will give you views of the Bristows Ramp
These is the only one that is accsesable by foot, the rest require a car or a good set of walking boots
If you need any more info PM And I will help as much as i can

Dan, ABZ is fairly easy to get around, there is an area near the terminal good for photography/spotting, you can also wander round the back of the hangars to see more choppers and shooting is best on the east side near the Bond hangar and GAT area. ABZ is not the busiest for fixed wing movements, but gets some great stuff like Wideroe D8-4’s Braathens,SAS, Flightline, Eastern, some interesting cargo stuff and of course tons of chopper movements.
