I’m sure the experts will be along with some amazing photos shortly, but here are a few of my humble efforts from a super day out.
Main highlights for me were Peter Teichman in Spitfire XI PL965 (the first time I’ve managed to see this aircraft fly), and the debut of the Midair Squadron Canberra PR9, which flew a wonderful display with some super “dirty” high-power passes, tight turns and a rip-roaring fast pass to finish. It’s eight or nine years since I last saw one of the RAF PR9s at RIAT! There was also superb flying from John Beattie in the T6, Rod Dean in the Bulldog, Peter Holloway in the Storch (In several displays I have never seen a Storch go sideways before!) and a very graceful display from Mark Miller in the Rapide G-AGJG. the BBMF Spitfire IX MK356 in its new scheme, and a host of other aeronautical entertainments. Not bad for a £15 entry charge!

Looks like a Renegade, not radial engined at all it has a rotax in it. It’s a micro light.
Yes it is a Murphy Renegade and as mentioned the radial type cowling hides a Rotax.

Ah, fond memories. Can still see Beverly’s lumbering along that runway back in the 60’s. My first posting was onto 47 Sqdn.

Just out of interest, how do you get on without radio comms ?
Or do you always fly in formation with another aircraft ?
I get on just fine, and a phone call will get you in most places. At the grassroots end, stripping etc, you don’t need a radio anyway.
Based 14 miles from Heathrow, I can amble over most of the south east, talking to nobody, keeping a good lookout, just as in the 1930’s- Remarkable really !
The Storch is indeed bonkers! Slower than a Cub, and faster too…

Nice pics, TT. Nothing humble about those at all.
I bet the Storch could fly backwards, given a stiff wind and the right throttle setting!
What’s the radial-engined biplane in the background of the first pic, anyone?
Anon.

Peter Holloway did a terrific job of showing off what the Storch is capable of. Flying along the display line sideways whilst head on to the crowd, take off in thirty to fourty metres, landing and stopping in little more than the length of the machine – just amazing. For such a large machine the Rapid showed that airliners don’t have to handle like a dropped house brick.

For me, the highlight was seeing Steve Kingman’s. Running Merlin, two runs during the day, quite a crowd gathered, it was fantastic.

Being non-radio in the Cub. I tried to get away before ‘the pack’, but someone else had the same idea !

and the debut of the Midair Squadron Canberra PR9
The PR9 made it’s debut airshow appearance last year. I saw it display at the Goodwood Revival in September, and fantastic it was too.
