Just been told by my father that they charge people to bring classic cars to the show, is this true? If so thats somewhat of a Joke, they pay the owners of the aircraft to attend so why charge people to display classic cars?!
In his words “they can sod off if im going to take the Mg there again, charging to display the car, what a joke”
Im sure his sentiments are echoed by other classic car enthusiasts?

That Rover lump would look far better under my MG’s bonnet sir! 😀

This “charge” has been in place now for many years, and year-on-year there has been an increasing number of Historic/Classic vehicle owners only too willing to support our aims in raising funds for the Thames Valley & Chiltern Air Ambulance Charity…..this year the total booked in stands at well over 400,so we must be doing something right????
I should also add that the £5 DONATION goes straight to the Air Ambulance and NOT to the organisers of the Abingdon Air & Country Charity Show

Wellesbourne Wings and Wheels 2010 lol
There are plenty of wings and wheels events 🙂
I just think its cheeky to charge people to exhibit their cars for the airshow organisers, dont you think?
Unless the whole concept of the show is to raise money for charity which is the case at Abingdon. Rougham, Old Warden and a few other places, Kemble I think.

Big mopars? Nice! If my Dad saw me writing that though he’d disown me, as he’s a Chevy man, Camaro fan through and through…
Guess it’s like anything though, depends how hard you press the loud pedal as to how thrifty is is. 6Ltr V12 Jag TWR XJS, when booted severely, would show 0 MPG current consumption on it’s little green 80’s LCD computer screen! But tickled gently, 20’s were possible.
Think Nashio966 might get upset at us for hijacking his thread now… 😮

I used to be into my Rovers (P4, 5 & 6) and later had Dodge Challenger and Charger, wasn’t much between them consumption wise, but quite alot in the acceleration department!

Good call Bruce.
But with your [mythical] Interceptor Pageno1, you have a problem my ‘B doesn’t- despite the stonking great V8 up front, with that (gorgeous) supercharger perched on top, you’re still limited to a 56 mph top speed. Due to the petrol tanker you need following you everywhere :p
…but I wouldn’t want to meet you next time I’m at York Dragway!

This thread has nothing to do with Historic Aviation, so its having a little journey of its own – at no cost, to GD…..

Oh yes, MGs for breakfast!:p

…Total thread drift I know, but… Mad Max Interceptor anyone?! 😀

Gooday All
You can understand them charging for MG’s (oh so common!) but if they were Australian Muscle Cars like the Ford Falcon GTHO, then I would get upset.
cheers
Amen to that, love Falcon XBs!

“They pay the owners of the aircraft to attend so why charge people to display classic cars?!”
Arr no they don’t!, in fact Abingdon will cost me this year circa £1200 to attend, not forgetting the £2000 to run the aircraft for a year and the share cost which was over £3K 11 years ago + all the fuel in training to get signed off (circa £20K over the years I would guess)
That makes £5 to attend in a classic car a much better option in fact a real bargain I would say – and yes I know its my choice to fly a jet but at least someone stupid keeps them going!

My apologies, that must have changed since he last thought about going
By: XF828 - 24th March 2010 at 21:43
It’s junk to me if it doesn’t have power steering, air con and a damn good sound system… plus it’s an MG, so it’s junk anyway. I’d rather drive a Fiat :diablo:
Having emailed the organisers to point them to this thread I had a remarkably swift response pointing out that the only charge is £5 per additional passenger, so perhaps if your father didn’t fill his car with people he’d get in for free. Perhaps his passengers can get off outside the airfield, walk in and pay the full price like everybody else? Little Gransden charges vehicle owners too. Seems asking for donations from them results in empty buckets. Misers…
By: Nashio966 - 24th March 2010 at 21:37
I would say that an original 1934 MG-PA is not a heap of junk, nor is my father “miserly” I would ask that you try not to confuse my family with your own mate 🙂
My point still stands. If someone is happy to bring along a car (such as my fathers) Or any other for the enjoyment of others and to better the show, why should they be charged for it.
Abingdon is the only show that charges classic car owners to bring their cars to exhibit (that I know of) I remember the last time I went to kemble airday we werent booked into the classic car list, but were shown through immediately and allowed to park in the classic car enclosure.
